Chandigarh: Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGIMER) has begun the online application process for PhD Program July 2023 Session.

Online application processing and examination fees [Through Debit/Credit Card/Net Banking (Payment through UPI may be avoided)] -
1. General/OBC Category: Rs. 1500/- Plus Transaction charges as applicable.
2. SC/ST Category: Rs. 1200/- Plus Transaction charges as applicable.
All candidates are advised to read the prospects and help manual carefully before filling the online application form and ensure that no column is left blank In the event of rejection of the applications form, no correspondence/request for reconsideration will be entertained. Candidates should download and take a print of the registration form. They should retain a copy of the registration form till the completion of the admission process.
A list of the faculty members willing to take PhD students and how many seats are available under them will be displayed on the PGI website, i.e., www.pgimer.edu.in The Annexure – 6 is required to be recommended specifically by the concerned faculty member. The faculty member should endorse one or two extra candidates (prospective) than the number of seats advertised under them.
Candidates for PhD courses who already have fellowship should choose a department and the faculty member (under whose guidance they desire to undergo PhD program) and indicate the same on the application form. Candidates can apply only in one department.
Admission to PhD courses offered at the Institute is done twice a year. The session commences on the first of January and the first of July each year. The admission n to the PhD courses imparted at the Institute is made on an India Merit basis by holding an entrance examination by the Institute after issuing a countrywide admission notice. The admission n notice is published in leading English & Hindi newspapers of India, usually during September/October and March/April for January and July Sessions, respectively.
The guide will have the option to accept or not accept the candidate who opts to do PhD under that faculty member. The candidate may opt. Only one faculty member. Those carrying their fellowship from various funding agencies and the In-service medical faculty of PGI will be exempted from the entrance tests and appear for counselling directly. However, all the candidates are required to fill out the online application form.
The candidates must take printouts of the duly filled online application form by logging in with their login id and password. Affix the same passport-size photograph (which was uploaded in the online form) on it. All the candidates must fill and submit Annexure–6 (recommendations of the concerned faculty member of PGIMER, Chandigarh, under whom they want to pursue their PhD) along with print out of duly filled online form and required certificates in Room No. 308, 2nd Floor, Training Branch, Kairon Block, PGI, Chandigarh. Applications without the requisite Annexure-6 will not be considered.
The following categories are eligible for registration to PhD program –
1. The candidates with their fellowship with various funding agencies stipends will be exempted from appearing in the entrance exam. However, all the candidates are required to fill out the online application form.
2. Limited PGI fellowships are available, which will be awarded strictly on merit.
3. Candidates supported by the faculty of the Institute through the respective faculty’s extramural project fun. Faculty has to ensure the support to the candidate through the entire period of PhD program (3-5 years. The candidate can do PhD only under the same faculty member who would support their candidature. The list of faculty members with extramural funding available and keen to take PhD students, as per their entitlement under the relevant rules, is available on the PGI website.
4. The candidate who once qualified for the PhD entrance examination (i.e., in the January or July Session) and failed to get themself registered under any guide (in the research scheme/project employee’s category) in that very session, the validity of having qualified that entrance examination should remain valid till the last date submission of online application form for the succeeding session.
5. Those candidates who desire to register themselves for PhD course with Research Scheme Employee category are also eligible to apply for the PGI Fellowship category. They must choose a separate category option, i.e. P I Fellowship and Research Scheme Employee (both), in the online application form. They are also directed to submit Annexure-5 and Annexure-6 with their application form. Ot erwise, their candidature will not be considered.
Submission of application by employed candidates –
The candidates in employment applying for PhD Program are required to submit their applications through the proper channels. They should also sign the undertaking in the downloaded copy of the registration form informing their employer about submitting their application to PGIMER. If any communication is received from their department/office withholding permission for the candidate's appear at the entrance examination/admission to the course, the candidature/admission of the candidate will be cancelled, and no further correspondence in this regard will be entertained.
Candidates applying for PhD program for July 2023 session must have fulfilled the following qualification(s) on the last day of submission of the online application form –
General Eligibility - A Candidate seeking admission to the course of study leading to the award of a Degree of Doctor of Philosophy must possess at least one of the following qualifications:
For Medical Sciences –
MBBS/MDS/Master of Physio-therapy with minimum 55% aggregate marks or MD/MS in the subject concerned or Diplomate of National Board of Examination. A “Failure” in the examination, “Compartment”, or “Re-appear” in the examination will constitute an attempt. Candidates who have obtained MBBS/MD/MS /MDS/Master of Physiotherapy degrees from Medical Colleges not recognized by the Medical Council of India/NMC are not eligible for admission.
For Non-Medical/Life Sciences/Social Behavioral Sciences -
The candidates who have passed M.Sc/MA/Masters in Engineering or its equivalent/ examination with at least 60 % marks in the subjects mentioned below: from the colleges/institutes/Universities recognized by the UGC are eligible.
For Non-Medical/Life Sciences –
A Postgraduate degree of Master of Science (M.Sc) or Master in Veterinary Science (M.V.Sc.) or M.Sc. (Laboratory Technology) in subjects allied to Medical Sciences such as Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Human Biology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Immunology, Life Sciences including Botany, Zoology, Genetics, Cell Biology, Pharmacology, Pharmacy, Organic Chemistry, Anthropology & M.Sc (Human Genomics) and ME/M.Tech.
For Social & Behavioral Sciences -
The candidates having Postgraduate degrees in the following subjects are eligible for Social & Behavioural Sciences, Anthropology, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Nursing, Nutrition, and Child Development.
OR
MA/M.Sc/M.Phil in Health Promotion/Education, Health Management, Epidemiology, Environmental Health/Environmental Sciences and Public Health Nutrition/Applied Nutrition/Food & Nutrition, Health Economics/Applied Economics/Economics, Public Health/Community Health and MPH, Audiology and Speech Therapy.
OR
Post graduation in Law, i.e., LLM and its equivalent qualification.
And
As regards the eligibility of the candidates having their fellowship with stipends from various funding agencies, they shall be exempted from appearing in the entrance exam. An attested copy of the result/fellowship award letter must be attached.
Candidates with a fellowship from a project (Either independent or in Extramural Project are NOT exempted from the entrance examination (CBT).
Candidates applying for admission as a sponsored/deputed candidate are required to furnish the following certificates/undertaking with their application from their employer for admission to the course -
1. The candidate concerned is a regular deputing/sponsoring authority employee and should have been working for at least three years.
2. After completion of the course/training at PGI, Chandigarh, the candidate will be suitably employed by the deputing/ sponsoring authority to work for at least five years in the speciality in which the candidate at PGI, Chandigarh receives the training.
3. No financial implications in the form of payments/ stipend etc., will devolve upon PGI, Chandigarh, during their course. Such payment will be the responsibility of the sponsoring authority.
In-Service candidates of PGIMER –
1. Should be a regular institute employee with at least three years of service at PGI.
2. Should get the application recommended by the Head of the Department or Section Head. While recommending any application, the Head should know that no substitute staff will be provided against in-service candidates if selected for the course.
3. Should have a minimum of three original papers published in indexed (Pubmed, Medlar, Scopus) Journals on the last date odatebmission of the online application form.
4. All in-service candidates, except PGI medical faculty members, must take the entrance test.
5. An applicant (staff) should be below 50.
6. For in-service faculty members/In-service candidates who desire to enrol in the PhD program, the application should be routed through the Head of the department with their recommendations along with the NOC from the concerned Establishment Branch.
The faculty candidate -
1. Should have at least three papers Published in the concerned discipline (Original Research Paper).
2. Should send a brief introduction of the project, including purpose and design.
3. The PGI medical faculty member must appear only in the counsel ng. The guide of a faculty member selected for a PhD program should have enough extramural grants to support their research during the PhD course.
A candidate applying for admission as a Foreign National candidate must take the printout of the online application form and furnish the relevant certificates required to route their application through the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Ind a, New Delhi. An advance copy must be submitted at PGIMER, Chandigarh, befdatethe last date of receipt of the application; however, applications of such candidates will be processed after receipt of the same through diplomatic channels.
These candidates and other can dates must also appear in the entrance examination. A separate merit list of these candidates will be prepared within their c category. There will be another separate merit list for Bhutanese nationals besides the list for foreign national seats. Selection of candidates will be made on merit based on their performance in the entrance examination.
Further, PGIMER has announced that candidates possessing a Master's Degree through distance learning courses will not be eligible.

The PGIMER will endeavour to accommodate the candidates in centres/cities opted for by t em. However, the PGIMER reserves the right to cancel/change of exam centre and ask the candidates of that centre/city to appear from another centre ty. PGIMER also reserves the right to divert candidates from any centre/city to another Centre/city to take the examination.
Covid-19 related instructions -
1. It will be mandatory for the candidates to wear a face mask covering their nose and mouth.
2. Candidates must carry a 50 ml transparent bottle of hand sanitisers.
3. Social distancing must be maintained.
Other important instructions -
1. No electronic/metal items and ornaments inside the exam centre will be allowed.
2. Shoes/footwear with thick soles and garments with large buttons will not be permitted.
3. For details, please see and follow the instructions given in the admit card.
4. The candidates will not resort to/adopt any unfair means, cheating, forgery and impersonation during the examination. Suppose a candidate is caught guilty of such an act. In that case, they shall be expelled from the examination hall, and the examination of such candidates, including the outcome, shall be terminated/cancelled immediately.
Declaration of result -
Results of PhD program will be notified on the website at www.pgimer.edu.in. The results of individual candidates will not be informed by telephone, and candidates are advised not to contact any PGI official from examinations/sections for such information. However, the individual results can be checked after the completion of the admission process.
The candidates who qualify for the entrance exam (CBT) must submit the documents mentioned above within three days after the declaration of the result, and candidates having their fellowship are required to submit the same at least 15 days before the counselling. Suppose the candidates fail to produce proof of their eligibility as per the above qualification. Their candidature will not be considered, and the entire responsibility will lie on the candidate.
Method of selection -
1. Part-I: Method of selection, i.e., aptitude test comprises (a) General Science, (b) English, (c) Biostatistics & Research Methodology, (d) Mental Ability of a total of 40 marks. All questions in this part are compelled ry, each with one mark.
2. Part II: Stream Specific (Medical, Non-Medical (Life Science and Social Behavioral Sciences), exam. There will be 100 questions of various disciplines, and the candidates must attempt 40.
3. There will be negative markings to the extent of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer in the theory paper.
Merit list & minimum qualifying marks -
Candidates scoring the below-mentioned minimum marks in the aptitude test and speciality-specific theory test (combined) will be eligible to appear in counselling for enrollment to PhD program -
1. General/OBC/Spon/FN category - 40 marks
2. SC/ST category - 36 marks
Medical examination -
Medical fitness will be the pre-condition for registration for all the candidates. Candidates will be medically examined y a Medical Board constituted by the Institute to determine their medical fitness.
Fees and Dues -
1. Registration fee: Rs. 500/-
2. Tuition fee: Rs. 350/- per annum
3. Laboratory fee: Rs. 900/- per annum
4. Security: Rs. 1000/- for recovery of breakages or loss of Equipment, balance if any, will be refundable on completion of the course.
5. Amalgamated fund: Rs. 720/- per annum
6. Examination fee (Viva-Voce): Rs. 1100/-
7. Security for hostel accommodation: Rs. 5000/- (refundable) to be deposited with Hostel Manager (if Hostel is allotted)
