10 MBBS students suspended over Ragging at Maharishi Markandeshwar Medical College
Solan: Taking strict action against 10 senior MBBS students, who were allegedly involved in ragging the first-year medicos, the college management of Sultanpur based Maharishi Markandeshwar Medical College and Hospital has suspended them.
Further, taking note of the complaint lodged by a first-year student, the management has initiated an inquiry into the matter, adds The Tribune.
The police also have taken cognizance of this and registering an FIR in this connection, they have started investigating the matter. A case under Section 3 of the HP Educational Institutions (Prohibition of Ragging) Act, 2009, and Sections 504, 506 and 34 of the IPC has been registered by the police, Parwanoo DSP Yogesh Rolta informed the daily. Police have also obtained the addressed of accused.
The incident came to light when the first-year medico, hailing from Nagrota Surian in Kangra district lodged a complaint with the Dharampur police. He alleged that on March 7, he was alone in his hostel room and at around 11 pm, his batchmates from the adjacent room informed him that MBBS interns and second-year students were calling him.
As per the allegations made by the student, the senior students were smoking and consuming liquor when he entered the room. After this, the seniors asked him to call aloud the names of his parents and in the meanwhile one senior student along with his associates abused him.
Further, the first-year medico was allegedly asked to perform obscene acts while naked. The seniors further allegedly abused the first-year student by saying that they would fetch bangles from the girls' hostel if he could not perform the tasks.
When the medico was allegedly threatened with physical abuse, he started fainting. However, that was not the end of the nightmare as one of the seniors came to the first-year medico's room and sat there for almost an hour. Then the seniors allegedly called names at the first-year student again and he was further barred from contacting his parents.
Feeling shattered, the medico spent the night crying and after gathering some courage, he informed about the incident to the warden in the morning. He has also submitted a written complaint to the principal of the medical college.
Allegedly, a senior student confronted the medico for this and abused him again.
While commenting on the matter, the medical superintendent of the medical college, Dr Manpreet Singh told The Tribune, "Ten students were suspended soon after we received a complaint from the first-year MBBS student on March 8. The complaints mentioned the names of two main culprits and their accomplices. The anti-ragging committee, headed by the principal, is investigating the complaint and further action would be initiated, as per the findings".
