Gurgaon: 125 MBBS students of ESIC Medical College and Hospital in Faridabad have reportedly been asked to vacate their hostel accommodations without prior notice. This move came after the cancellation of their internship proposals.
At any government medical institution, aspiring MBBS graduates typically engage in internship programs as a prerequisite for pursuing advanced degrees such as MD or higher. However, a recent turn in events has left students grappling with unforeseen hurdles. Amidst a flurry of protests staged by the affected students, the college's dean attributed the cancellation of internship opportunities to the fact that they were not registered with the medical council yet.
According to the management, the protesting alumni are neither interns nor students at the college because they haven't enrolled as practitioners yet. As a result, they are not permitted to remain in the hostel, reports Times of India. Once they register, they will be allotted interns' hostel on application ... we have made about 500m away from the campus,” the official said.
According to sources, the academic branch initially issued internship orders on March 1, promptly withdrawn mere hours later, following an apparent change in directives. Offering insights into the matter, Deputy Dean Dr. Anil Kumar Pandey shed light on the confusion surrounding the internships. He clarified that a
s per the directives from the Haryana Medical Council, the internships have been extended to graduating students amidst the pandemic. However, the recent turn of events has left many students in limbo, unsure of their next steps.
“That was a time of crisis. But now that we are returning to normalcy, we cannot continue with the same. The council in Sept 2023 released an order restricting the practice. From this batch, we are adopting the standard method of approving internship applications only after registration. The academic branch mistakenly issued the letter, but it was soon withdrawn,” said Dr Pandey.
One of the aggravated students stated, “All our seniors were allowed to go straight to internships after their degrees. Why are we being discriminated against? They are making us leave our lodging too. We were never told about any new rule of discontinuing the internship."
Explaining that the registration process is not going to be difficult, Pandey mentioned that the college facilitates registration process with the state medical council, so that students don’t have to travel to Panchkula. Pandey added that 70 graduates had already submitted their documents for initiating the process and college would also felicitate them.
