13 MBBS Students in Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Medical College Accuse Pharmacology AP of Sexual Harassment

New Delhi: In a shocking incident, 13 female MBBS students from Delhi-based Baba Saheb Ambedkar Medical College have accused an Assistant Professor of Pharmacology of sexual harassment during a viva examination.

Based on the complaint by the students, a case has been registered by the police. Meanwhile, soon after the matter came to light, a demonstration was organized by women's group and the protest soon manifested as a massive Public Outrage outside the college premises. Protesters were seen holding placards denouncing the accused professor and demanding justice.

Police officials were deployed at the spot to maintain order. The video of the protest and a complaint letter by one of the medicos soon became viral on social media.

Writing to the Principal of the medical college, a student belonging to 2021 MBBS batch stated that the alleged incident took place during a practical exam in the pharmacology department.

As per the student, the incident took place in January, during the practical exam, when the Assistant Professor of Pharmacology allegedly gave her a specimen of Vaginal Pessary and started asking inappropriate questions. Allegedly, even though the student was getting uncomfortable, the Professor asked the student to 'get comfortable and answer openly.'

When the student stopped answering, the accused Professor allegedly sent her out and asked her to come back again. "Then he started asking me about the syringe and touched my knee and thigh. Then he came up and touched my neck and ask how do we use it on these locations. Then I stood up and then he started asking me irrelevant questions about breast abscess and have inappropriate gestures," the complainant student mentioned in the letter.

Allegedly, the Professor asked the student to go to him alone and promised to teach her how to write answers to get more marks. He further allegedly informed the student that he would check their paper and he would take care to give good marks to her. As per the medico, the same thing happened with other girls also.

As per the latest media report by the Times of India, one of the students revealed that other students who faced similar situations remained silent due to fear of failing. Allegedly, despite lodging a complaint with the authorities, no action was taken against the accused professor. The head of the department allegedly supported the professor and discredited the student's claims.

Now, after the recent incident came to light, police have filed an FIR against the professor under relevant sections of Indian Penal Code for assaulting a woman with intent to outrage her modesty and for insulting the modesty of a woman, adds TOI

Meanwhile, protesting against the incident, women groups and other protestors were seen holding placards denouncing the accused professor. The latest media report by New Indian adds that highlighting the alleged negligence of the authorities, one of the female protestors, expressed her dismay and exclaimed, "We will not let it be Sandeskhali or West Bengal. The women in the college are suffering. Police should take strict action. They lodged the case but released him on bail. All went in vain. We want action." Responding to the situation, police authorities have assured that they were actively investigating the allegations. 

The videos from the protest site where the protestors can be seen raising slogans demanding action in the matter have become viral on social media platforms.
