14 top institutes to mentor Medical Colleges in expanding COVID19 testing capacity: Medical Council releases list

Delhi - With the rise in coronavirus cases in the country, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW) has identified 14 prestigious institutes across India to mentor medical colleges and expand COVID-19 testing capacity.

The announcement to this effect was made by the Health Ministry's Joint Secretary Lav Agarwal who stated the government is expanding the COVID-19 testing capacity in state-run as well as private medical colleges. 

"We are working on an urgent basis to expand the capacity for COVID-19 testing in government and private medical colleges across the country. Fourteen mentor institutes, including the AIIMS and NIMHANS, have been identified to mentor the medical colleges and expand the coronavirus testing capacity," Agarwal added.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that the Board of Governors in supersession of Medical Council of India (MCI BoG) has directed all the medical colleges to prepare for COVID 19 (coronavirus) testing facilities and in regard to the same the authority has issued a set of guidelines for the institutes.

The direction to effect was issued by the MCI BoG's Secretary-General Dr RK Vats ordering all the government and private medical colleges and deemed universities to set up labs to investigate COVID-19 cases as per Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) guidelines.
