Jammu: In a tragic incident, a second-year MBBS student was found dead inside his hostel room at Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu.

Identified as Falak Sayed Khan, a resident of Harni village in Poonch’s Mendhar area, the student was discovered hanging from the ceiling fan after hostel authorities forced open his locked door.

Khan, who was pursuing his second year of MBBS, was rushed through necessary legal formalities, including a post-mortem, before his body was handed over to his family. While the exact reason behind his extreme step remains unclear, police have initiated inquest proceedings to probe the circumstances surrounding his death.

"A 22-year-old MBBS student committed suicide inside his hostel room in Government Medical College (GMC) here on Sunday. Falak Sayed Khan, a resident of Harni village in Poonch’s Mendhar area, was found hanging with the ceiling fan inside the boys hostel of the GMC at Bakshi Nagar after the door of his room was forcibly opened," the officials said.

They said Khan was in the second-year of his course and the motive behind his extreme step was not known immediately. The body was handed over to his family for last rites after completion of legal formalities including post-mortem, the officials said, adding that police have started inquest proceedings to investigate his death.

Principal GMC Jammu, Dr Ashutosh Gupta confirmed to Greater Kashmir that the student had died by suspected suicide. He said police has registered a case and investigation had been initiated. “It is heart-breaking to see a young and promising life ending like this,” he said.

He said the GMC authorities will extend all support for a fair investigation into the matter. “For now, it looks like a case of suicide,” he said. He said the body had been kept in mortuary of the medical college and would be handed over after legal requirements.
