50 New Medical Colleges approved across country this year, None in Kerala
New Delhi: While the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) recently announced that 50 new medical colleges have been added in the country, none of these medical colleges have been added in the State of Kerala.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that in a major boost to undergraduate medical education in India, altogether 50 new medical colleges have been approved this year with an intake capacity of 8,195 MBBS seats.
With this, the total number of UG medical seats in the country has been increased to 1,07,658. According to official sources, with the addition of these 50 new medical colleges (30 government and 30 private), the number of medical colleges in the country now stands at 702.
ANI adds that out of these 50 new medical colleges, 13 medical colleges, which have been recognised, are from Telangana, and five each from Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan. Another four medical colleges have been recognised in Maharashtra.

Further, three medical colleges have been recognised each from Assam, Gujarat, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Odisha and West Bengal received recognition for two medical colleges each while Madhya Pradesh, Nagaland and Uttar Pradesh got one medical college each.
Therefore, the break-up shows that none of these 50 new medical colleges have been added to the State of Kerala. Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that regarding the number of medical colleges available in the country, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar had informed the Rajya Sabha that India had altogether 660 medical colleges with an intake capacity for 101,043 MBBS, 45,471 MD, MS and PG Diploma, 4,997 DM and MCh seats.
Providing the detailed break-up MoS Health had informed that there were altogether 33 medical colleges available in Kerala with an intake capacity for 4605 MBBS Seats. Among these, there are 12 government medical colleges in the State offering MBBS admission in 1755 MBBS seats. Apart from these, another 2850 MBBS seats are available for admission in the existing 21 private medical colleges in Kerala.
