8 RIMS medicos found guilty of harassing few juniors: Probe panel suggests disciplinary action

The committee led by the Dean, Student Welfare of RIMS, Dr Hirendra Birua submitted its report on the incident to the Dean, academic, Dr Satish Chandra, who confirmed that they were scheduled to meet the Director of the RIMS, Dr Prasad Baghmare regarding the issue on Thursday evening.

The incident took place on Sunday, wherein, a brawl between two groups of undergraduate students after the seniors complained of getting disturbed with the post-exam celebrations by the junior students.

The alleged 'loud' celebration did not go down well with the seniors who are about to appear for the NEET PG exam, scheduled to be held on September 11. As the celebration 'disturbed' their preparation, the seniors allegedly started ragging the juniors by teaching them how to maintain the academic environment in the hostel.

Ultimately the officers from Bariatu Police Station had rushed to the spot and took charge of the situation.

Followed by a probe in the incident, a member of the probe committee, who refrained from using the term "ragging" despite complaint by juniors, recently stated that the students are from different batches and include undergraduates as well as postgraduates who were involved in the scuffle at hostel number 7.

"Eight students have been found guilty of creating chaos in an inebriated condition and attacking seniors in men's hostel after harassing a few juniors on September 4 night. The committee, after probing all the aspects and reasons behind the situation, has recommended disciplinary action against eight students," the member told TOI.

"I have received a copy of the report and we were supposed to hold a meeting for taking further action. However, as director sir is on leave it has been postponed and we will be holding a meeting in this regard as soon as he returns," confirmed Dr Chandra.

However, no action has been taken by the hospital management yet. Officials stated that a formal announcement will be made after Rims director is available.

Meanwhile, a member of Junior Doctor Association (JDA) who had demanded strict action against the students told the daily that a 2016 batch student is the mastermind and he has been a serial offender.

"We have demanded immediate suspension of all those who were found misbehaving with either juniors or seniors. Apart from that, there is a 2016 batch student who has also been involved in a scuffle with canteen persons and he too was involved in the incident," said the JDA member.
