The incident came to light after several social media users and doctors took to a popular social media platform 'X' (formerly Twitter) to express grief and raise concerns about the incident.
A doctor by his social media account, autopsy surgeon, shared on X, "Another heartbreaking case has emerged from FAAMCH, Barpeta, Assam. A second-year postgraduate trainee in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and a native of Andhra Pradesh was found dead by suicide in her hostel room."
Further, he mentioned that "This is not the first such incident at FAAMCH. On January 22, 2025 a third-semester PG resident doctor of was found dead by suicide inside his hostel room."

Reacting to the unfortunate incident, a general surgeon wrote on X, "Silent Crisis in Medical Colleges: Who Will Bell the Cat? Another tragic loss has jolted the medical community—this time from FAAMCH, Barpeta, Assam… Behind the prestigious walls of medical colleges lies a toxic ecosystem—particularly for postgraduate residents. Junior Residents (JRs) are often treated not as learners, but as tools. Used, overburdened, and spoken to with arrogance by some Senior Residents (SRs) and Consultants, many PGs endure this quietly out of fear and systemic helplessness. From being forced to cover for others to being denied adequate rest, they are made to carry the entire load of departments that are poorly managed or apathetically run."
He went on to highlight the hostile environment that the resident doctors face daily. He said, "While medicine is inherently demanding, the unnecessary and inhumane burdens placed on PGs are neither educational nor ethical. The behavior of many seniors—ranging from neglect to outright humiliation—breaks spirits instead of building confidence. Unfortunately, administrative bodies turn a blind eye. Their silence becomes complicity. Year after year, departments go unchecked. Heads of Departments remain unaccountable. Hostel grievances go unresolved. Rest hours remain theoretical. And the idea of mental health support is non-existent."
Another user on X echoed similar concerns and said, “Another young doctor lost. A tragic reminder: medical trainees need support, not silence. Rest in peace. Demand systemic change.”
Medical Dialogues had previously reported that a resident doctor undergoing a post-graduate medical course at the Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College and Hospital (FAAMCH) allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling of his hostel room in Assam's Barpeta district. The deceased hailed from Gujarat and was in the third semester of his postgraduate course when he decided to take this extreme step.
