Ahmedabad: In an unfortunate incident, a first year MBBS student at BJ Medical College, Ahmedabad, allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling in her hostel room.

The 19-year-old deceased was a second-semester student who had secured admission to the college after clearing NEET with high marks. The college authorities described her as diligent who never skipped classes and was attentive in studies.

However, a three-page handwritten note recovered by the police mentioned that she called herself a 'failure' and expressed feelings of loneliness and difficulty in making friends.

Despite being regular in attending classes, she had been struggling silently. Friends described her as an introvert who found it difficult to connect with others, said the police.

According to the police, as reported by TOI, the student was found hanging in her room at a Girls’ Hostel in Shahibaug on Monday afternoon. When she did not attend classes, and there was no movement from her room, the college authorities were alerted. After the police arrived at the scene upon being notified, she was found dead inside her room.

During the search of her room, police recovered a three-page handwritten note addressed to her parents.

Explaining the context in the note, Inspector J H Sindhav said, "She called herself a "failure" and wrote that she felt alone and unable to make friends. She did not blame anyone else for her decision. No exams were held recently or scheduled soon."

He further said, "College authorities said that she had cleared NEET with high scores to earn her seat at BJ Medical College, one of Gujarat's most competitive medical institutions. She rarely missed a class. She stayed away only on Monday."

Originally from Keshod in Junagadh district, the student had moved into the hostel around five months ago. Her elder sister, who lives in Gandhinagar, was informed about the incident and reached the hospital. After postmortem, the body was taken to her hometown.

"It is surprising that a girl who scored so well in NEET called herself a failure," the college authorities said.

The Shahibaug Police have registered a case of accidental death and initiated an investigation into the matter.

The cops said that her roommate and classmates will be questioned, and her mobile phone will also be examined to understand the circumstances leading to the incident.
