New Delhi: Controversy brewed up after the premier Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) Chandigarh allegedly denied admission to a final year student from Delhi University for failing to provide the mark sheet of 6th semester to secure admissions in Biotech under OBC quota.

The synopsis of the issue was that Delhi being a hotspot of COVID-19 situation has impacted the schedule of examination, whereby, DU was

to conduct its UG/PG examination from the beginning of July month but it postponed its exam to August 2020. The applicant identified as Monika Bazzad from Gargi College had appeared for the entrance exam for Biotechnology which was organized by PGIMER Chandigarh on 22nd June.
However, despite securing the first rank in the entrance examination, the PGI Chandigarh authorities did not consider her for the counseling session which was supposed to happen on July 22.
After enquiring from the admission committee in PGIMER about not calling her, she was informed that failure in providing the mark sheet led to her dismissal from the counseling session.
In spite of furnishing an explanation regarding the exams not being held by DU yet and even offering to give them undertaking that if she fails to provide the mark sheet of 6th semester after the examination results in September due to any reason, the institute would be free to cancel her admission, there was no consideration.
Clarifying on the matter, the PGI Chandigarh stated that anyone can appear for the entrance exam but the counseling protocols and documents verifications have to be followed by the student afterward. It further added that all the norms were clearly mentioned in the prospectus of the institution and the admission process is being done in sync with that only after detailed deliberation on the issue during the institution meeting.

"We completely understand the genuineness of Monika's case that she secured 1st rank in the entrance exam and delay in the final semester of UG degree course by the Delhi University is beyond her control. But we are in an unprecedented situation and there are some other cases in different courses who face the same problem,' the PGIMER authorities told The Logical Indian.

Though the University Grant Commission (UGC) has instructed all the universities to hold the final year examinations and Delhi University following the guidelines of UGC confirmed that they will be conducting exams from the 15th of August, Delhi University has postponed its open-book examination from July to August due to the COVID-19 condition.

The grieved student is now expressing her dismay on social media platforms whereby she is being supported by Commenting on the lack of equation between the two great educational institutions of the country, DU and PGIMER, famous educationalist Bhim S Dahiya told a leading daily "After all, how is a student responsible for delay in the exams? COVID-19 is a global situation and it should be factored in all the decision-making process post-corona period. The student should be given ample time to provide her degree and she has remained a meritorious student and also 1st rank holder in the entrance exam conducted by PGIMER Chandigarh."
