Demand for NMC nod to GMC Alibaug submitted to Health Minister
Alibaug: The demand for the approval from National Medical Commission (NMC) to GMC Alibaug was recently submitted to the Union Health Minister, Mansukh Mandaviya.
The COVID-19 pandemic has clearly highlighted how India's medical fraternity is understaffed and overworked. This disparity shows that the establishment of government medical educational institutions is the need of the hour.
With this, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has urged Union Health Minister, Mansukh Mandaviya to give approval and instruct the National Medical Commission (NMC) to grant permission for institution of a government medical college in Usar, Alibaug taluka in Maharashtra's Raigad district, reports The Free Press Journal.
They requested that the medical college should have 100 MBBS seats for now. The Konkan region of Maharashtra state does not have a medical college as of yet.
Maharashtra government has issued an administrative approval of Rs 4,06,96,68,000 for the construction of government medical college and hospital building.
According to the Free Press Journal, the college is expected to be launched with 100 seats by August-September in the academic year 2021-22 for first-year MBBS students and is slated to have a 500-bed hospital too. A 52-acre plot of land has been reserved for the college in Usar Village, Alibaug-Roha road. The project is expected to be completed in three years.
The institution of this medical college and hospital appears to be a major step in reducing the disparity of medical treatment available between urban and rural areas.
As of now, Maharashtra has a total number of 9000 MBBS seats in 26 government medical colleges and 31 private based institutes.
