GMC Amritsar 8 MBBS students suspended over alleged ragging attempt
Amritsar: Taking cognizance of an alleged ragging attempt involving junior students, the Government Medical College (GMC), Amritsar, has reportedly suspended eight senior MBBS students.
The students, all from the 2025 MBBS batch, were suspended after they allegedly visited the rooms of junior students from the 2026 batch at the boys’ hostel on the night of September 22.
As per a latest TOI report, the incident took place in the E-Block of the hostel, where the eight students allegedly went to the rooms of junior students from the 2026 batch and knocked on their doors, asking them to come outside. Fearing a ragging incident, the junior students alerted their family members and informed the college authorities.
After receiving the information, the hostel superintendent and warden reached the spot, after which the senior students allegedly left the hostel.
The college administration subsequently examined CCTV footage and conducted a preliminary inquiry. Based on the preliminary findings, the eight senior students were suspended pending a detailed inquiry.
However, the college’s Anti-Ragging Committee has now completed its detailed investigation and submitted its report to the Director-Principal for further action, as per a TOI report.
Commenting on the matter, GMC Vice-Principal Dr J P Attri said, "The suspension was ordered on the basis of a preliminary report submitted by the college’s anti-ragging team. The committee has now completed its detailed investigation and submitted its findings to the director-principal, who will decide the nature of action to be taken against the students."
He further said, "The college had also received representations from the parents of the suspended students seeking details of the alleged violations and questioning the grounds on which their children had been suspended. The anti-ragging committee examined the conduct of each student, including the latest incident and their past behaviour, to determine whether any action amounted to a violation of anti-ragging regulations. The committee has examined the allegations against each student and categorised the alleged violations according to their nature."
According to Attri, the committee also assessed whether the alleged acts constituted minor or major violations. He said that even entering a prohibited area of the hostel or engaging in conduct that could cause mental pressure or distress to junior students could amount to a violation, depending on the circumstances.
Meanwhile, a special meeting has been scheduled for October 5, when the college is expected to take a final decision on the matter. The students will remain under suspension until the final decision is taken.
