Health Minister Apprises on Status of New Medical Colleges in Aspirational Districts

New Delhi: A total number of 47 medical colleges have been made functional in 14 States under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) for "Establishment of new medical colleges attached with existing district/referral hospitals", MoS Health Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar informed the Lok Sabha.

Central Government has received a total number of 27 proposals from States/UTs for establishing new medical colleges in aspirational districts. Out of which, 21 proposals have been approved based on the criteria of Scheme, further revealed the Minister.

The Minister of State, Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW) was replying to a series of questions related to the new medical colleges in the aspirational districts. The queries included the data related to the number of proposals received and approved under phase III of the centrally sponsored scheme and also the number of proposals which are under consideration.

"Under Phase-III of Centrally Sponsored Scheme(CSS) namely 'Establishment of new Medical Colleges attached with existing district/referralhospitals', the Ministry had received 27 proposal from States/UTs for establishing new medical colleges in aspirational districts. Out of which, 21 proposals have been approved based on the criteria of Scheme," revealed the MoS Health before the Parliament.

Among these 21 medical colleges, the medical college in Andhra Pradesh is set to be built up in Paderu(Vishakhapatnam) district. In Chattisgarh, Korba, Mahasamud and Kanker will have three medical colleges. In case of Gujarat, the medical college will be built up in Narmada district.

Handwara (Distt. Kupwara) in Jammu & Kashmir, Yadgiri in Karnataka, Rajgarh and Singrauli in Madhya Pradesh, Nandurbar in Maharashtra, Kalahandi in Odisha, Baran, Jaisalmer, Karauli, and Sirohi districts in Rajasthan, Haridwar, and Rudrapur, Distt. Udham Singh Nagar in Uttarakhand, Chandauli and Sonbhadra in Uttar Pradesh, Ramanathapuram and Virudhunagar in Tamil Nadu will also have medical colleges under phase III of the central scheme.

While addressing the question regarding the number of proposals which are under consideration, Dr. Pawar stated, "Further, under Phase-III of the Scheme, all the 75 approved medical colleges have already been allocated and therefore, no further proposals are under consideration."

Details of medical colleges approved under Phase-I & II in Aspirational Districts under Centrally Sponsored Scheme for 'Establishment of new Medical Colleges attached with existing District/Referral Hospitals'

The Minister has also revealed the details regarding the approved medical colleges in aspirational districts under Phase-I and Phase-II of the Centrally Sponsored Scheme.

As per the data presented by the MoS Health, under Phase I, medical colleges that have been approved are located in Dhubri District in Assam, Purnia district in Bihar, Rajnandgaon in Chhattisgarh, Chamba in Himachal Pradesh, Dumka, Hazaribagh, and Palamu(Daltonganj) in Jharkhand, Baramulla in Jammu & Kashmir, Khandwa and Vidisha in Madhya Pradesh, Bolangir and Koraput in Odisha, and Bahraich in Uttar Pradesh.

Under Phase II, the approved medical colleges are located in Sitamarhi and Jamui districts in Bihar, Chaibasa (Singhbhum) in Jharkhand, Dholpur in Rajasthan, Fatehpur and Siddharthnagar (Domariyaganj) in Uttar Pradesh.

Giving the details regarding the status of completion of work regarding the medical colleges under the Central Scheme, Minister Pawar informed the Lok Sabha, "Under the Scheme, a total 157 medical colleges have been sanctioned, out of which, 47 have become functional. The concerned State/UT Governments are the implementing agencies under the Scheme. As per information provided by the States/UTs, the works of the remaining medical colleges are at various stages of completion."

As per the data revealed by the Minister, the districts where these 47 medical colleges have been made functional include Port Blair district in A & N Islands, Naharlagun in Arunachal Pradesh, Diphu in Assam, Rajnandgaon and Sarguja in Chhattisgarh, Chamba, Hamirpur and Nahan (Sirmour) in Himachal Pradesh, Dumka, Hazaribagh, and Palamu (Daltonganj) in Jharkhand, Anantnag, Baramulla, Rajouri, Kathua, and Doda in J & K, Datia, Khandwa, Ratlam, Shahdol, Vidisha, Chindwara, and Shivpuri in Madhya Pradesh, Gondia, and nandurbar in Maharashtra, Falkawn in Mizoram, Balasore, Baripada (Mayurbhanj), Bolangir, Koraput in Odisha, Barmer, Bharatpur, Bhilwara, Churu, Dungarpur, Pali, and Sikar in Rajasthan, Basti, Faizabad, Firozabad, Shahjahanpur, and Bahraich in Uttar Pradesh, and Birbhum (Rampur Hat), Cooch Behar, Diamond Harbour, Raiganj (North Dinajpur) and Purulia in West Bengal.
