Govt approved to set up 157 new medical colleges in districts across the country: Health Minister
New Delhi: The Government has approved the establishment of 157 new medical colleges by upgrading the hospitals in districts where there are no medical colleges, the MoS Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, recently informed the parliament.
He stated that the new colleges will be set up in three phases, under a Centrally Sponsored Scheme for "Establishment of new medical colleges attached with existing district/referral hospitals " for the establishment of the medical college by upgrading the district hospitals in districts where there are no medical colleges.
In his written response to Lok Sabha, Mr. Ashwini Kumar Choubey presented State-wise details of these 157 colleges along with funds earmarked for the opening of these colleges. As per the minister, there is a plan to set up 58 medical colleges in 20 states under phase one of the scheme. Further 24 medical colleges in 8 states and 75 colleges in 18 states will be set up under phases two and three, respectively.
Phase one
Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh will get the biggest share of 7 colleges in the districts of Barmer, Bharatpur Bhilwara, Churu, Dungarpur, Pali and Sikar in Rajasthan and Datia, Khandwa, Ratlam, Shahdol, Vidisha, Chindwara, and Shivpuri districts of Madhya Pradesh. Closely followed by 5 colleges in Uttar Pradesh in the districts of Basti, Faizabad, Firozabad, Shahjahanpur and Bahra.
Similarly, Assam will get 4 colleges in the districts of Dhubri, Nagaon, North Lakhimpur and Diphu. Bihar will have colleges in districts of Purnia, Saran(Chhapara), Samastipur. Phase one will see the establishment of 5 colleges each in Jammu and Kashmir and Orissa. the states of Chattisgarh and Haryana will get 2 colleges each. Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Uttarakhand will get 3 colleges each in phase one and one college each will be set up in Arunachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Mizoram , Nagaland, Punjab and Andaman and Nicobar islands.
The total cost of the establishment of one Medical College under this scheme is Rs.189 crore. The fund sharing ratio between the Central Government and States under the Scheme is 90:10 for North East and the Special Category States and 60:40 for other States.
Phase two
Phase two will see the establishment of 24 medical colleges in 8 states with a maximum of 8 colleges in Uttar Pradesh in the districts Etah, Hardoi, Pratapgarh Fatehpur, Siddharthnagar(Domariyaganj, Deoria Ghazipur and Mirzapur. Bihar and West Bengal will get 5 colleges each. Jharkhand will get 2 colleges followed by one college each in Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Sikkim, and Rajasthan.
The total cost of the establishment of one Medical College under this scheme is Rs 250 crore.
Phase three
75 colleges in 18 states will be established in phase 3 with a maximum of 15 colleges to be set up in Rajasthan in the districts of Alwar, Baran, Banswara, Chittorgarh, Jaisalmer, Karauli, Nagaur, Shri Ganganagar, Sirohi, Bundi, Sawai Madhopur, Tonk, Hanumangarh, Jhunjhunu and Dausa. Followed by UP (13), Tamil Nadu (10), MP (5) and Gujrat(5) . States of Maharashtra, Nagaland, Odisha, Manipur and West Bengal will get 1 college each in phase three.
