India has altogether 482 Recognized Medical Colleges, maximum in Karnataka: Health Minister

New Delhi: According to the details shared by the National Medical Commission, India has altogether 482 recognized medical colleges, the Union Minister of State for Health, Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar informed the Lok Sabha last week.

Further, the MoS Health Dr. Pawar also shared the State/UT-wise details of the medical colleges. As per the details shared by the Minister, among the 482 recognized medical colleges, Karnataka has the most number of recognized medical institutes i.e. altogether 56 medical colleges.

Maharashtra comes in second place with 49 recognized medical institutes, followed by 48 colleges in Tamil Nadu and 46 colleges in the State of Uttar Pradesh.

Apart from these, 30 recognized medical colleges in Andhra Pradesh, 7 colleges in Assam, 13 colleges in Bihar, 10 in Chhattisgarh, 8 colleges in Delhi, 27 colleges in Gujarat, 11 colleges in Haryana, 8 colleges in Himachal Pradesh, 5 in Jammu & Kashmir, 3 in Jharkhand, 31 colleges in Kerala, 19 colleges in Madhya Pradesh, 2 colleges in Manipur, 11 colleges in Odisha, 9 in Pondicherry, 9 colleges in Punjab, 21 colleges in Rajasthan, 26 in Telangana, 2 colleges in Tripura, 6 in Uttarakhand, and 18 colleges in West Bengal.

Further, there is 1 recognized medical college each in Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Arunachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Goa, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Sikkim. However, there is no recognized medical institute in Dadra & Nagar Haveli.

The MoS Health Dr Bharati Pravin Pawar shared this information while responding to a number of questions raised by several members of the Parliament. The Lok Sabha members sought to know about the number of recognized medical colleges in the country and if it is a fact that a large number of medical colleges are not following the regulations of NMC and do not fulfil its mandatory requirements with regard to the registered faculty members and staff. Further, the questions included details regarding the corrective steps taken/proposed to be taken by the Government in this regard.

Stating that there are altogether 482 recognized medical colleges in the country, the Minister further informed that NMC has notified the Minimum Requirements for Annual M.B.B.S. Admissions Regulations, 2020 prescribing the standards for establishment of Medical Institutions and for offering MBBS course. Further, NMC has notified the Establishment of Medical Institutions, Assessment & Rating Regulations, 2023 to ensure that standards are complied with by the medical colleges.

Further, the NMC through Medical Assessment & Rating Board (MARB) grants permission for establishment of new Medical College/ Renewal of Permission/ increase of seats on the basis of assessment report/ sworn affidavit and fulfillment of criteria which also includes availability of infrastructure and teaching faculty as per the Minimum Standard Requirement, Dr. Pawar stated.

Moreover, various Information Technology (IT) initiatives like Aadhaar Enabled Biometric Attendance System (AEBAS), Health Management information System (HMIS) and CCTVs in every college have been implemented by NMC to monitor the Faculty, Patient Load, Clinical Material and infrastructure of the medical colleges, the Minister further informed.
