Karnataka- Mysuru Medical College and Research Institute (MMCRI), Karnataka, has recently submitted a proposal to the National Medical Commission (NMC), seeking approval to increase the intake to 250 for 2025-26.

The proposal is significant amid growing demand for medical education and intense competition for seats in government colleges, as these seats remain affordable and highly sought after. A year earlier, the medical college's MBBS seat intake was increased from 150 to 200.

In this regard, speaking to The Hindu, MMCRI Dean and Director KR Dakshayani said that the college had formally requested the NMC to evaluate its infrastructure and resources to assess its eligibility for increased admissions. “The college is well-equipped and meets all the requirements, especially after the extensive infrastructure development carried out during our centenary celebrations”, she said.

She further added, “Our request to increase the MBBS intake is backed by robust infrastructure and consistent patient load. We are confident of securing approval from the NMC, having fulfilled all necessary criteria outlined in the revised seat expansion guidelines”.

If the NMC approves the increase in MBBS seats, it will help strengthen its role in preparing competent medical professionals to meet the growing healthcare needs of India. As of today, only BMC has 250 seats, while other old government medical colleges have 200 seats each.

Meanwhile, significant upgrades have been made in the last two years. These include the construction of two new hostels, one for boys and one for girls, with 150 rooms, and each room has attached toilets and can comfortably accommodate three students. The hostels, however, are located on the PKTB Hospital campus on KRS Road.

Along with this, MMCRI has also built a new lecture complex, which has three classrooms that can accommodate 300 students each and two examination halls that can accommodate 500 students each. Both the undergraduate and postgraduate libraries have also been upgraded as part of the expansion efforts.
