NMC nod to 100 additional MBBS seats at 2 Andhra GMCs
Andhra Pradesh: In a boost medical education in Andhra Pradesh, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has recently approved a total of 75 and 25 additional MBBS seats for the government medical colleges in Kadapa and Nellore, respectively.
Andhra Pradesh Minister Satya Kumar Yadav recently informed about the development in a press release, which stated that "the NMC has issued a letter of permission to increase MBBS seats by 75 at Kadapa Government Medical College and by 25 at Nellore ACSR Government Medical College for the 2026-27 academic year."
Therefore, with the additional seats, the total number of MBBS seats increased from 175 to 250 at Kadapa Government Medical College and from 175 to 200 at Nellore ACSR Government Medical College, the press release further mentions, as reported by PTI.
The increase in seat capacity is expected to come into effect from the 2026-27 academic session, enabling both institutions to admit students in revised numbers in accordance with the National Medical Commission's approval.
This expansion is expected to strengthen the state's medical education infrastructure and create additional opportunities for candidates seeking admission to the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) program through government medical colleges.
Seats in the state's government medical colleges are filled through counselling conducted by Dr NTR University of Health Sciences; 85% of the seats are reserved under the state quota, while 15% are allocated through the All India Quota via the MCC.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu government is planning legal action, including a possible move to the Supreme Court, after three private medical colleges were granted deemed university status, a decision that has reportedly shifted around 650 MBBS seats out of the state's seat matrix.
