Indore: With a significant nod from the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of the National Medical Commission (NMC), Indore-based Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College (MGMMC) has been approved to increase its seat intake taking the total intake capacity from 150 to 250 MBBS seats.

The renewal of permission from the Apex medical education regulatory body comes in respect of the fourth batch of MBBS students against the increased intake capacity.

The permission has come from MARB based on the affidavit submitted by the medical college about compliance with the requirement of staff and infrastructure for running 250 seats.

Earlier NMC approved the college's third batch of MBBS students in 2022. Previously, there were only 150 MBBS seats at the institute, the seats were increased with permission from the apex medical body in the academic year 2020-2021 and back in 2021, NMC issued the first renewal in this regard.

Formerly known as King Edward Medical School, MGM Medical College, Indore is one of the oldest medical colleges in India. The college has been offering MBBS courses since 1948; consequently, PG medical courses were introduced in the medical collegein 1953. Currently, the medical college offers undergraduate medical education in around 250 MBBS seats and a total of 240 PG medical seats are available at the institute.

Talking about the matter, Dean Dr Sanjay Dixit told Free Press Journal that NMC has considered the affidavits submitted by the college regarding its facilities and faculty.

As faculty members' attendance is recorded through an online biometric system, and the college has already developed the necessary infrastructure for 250 seats, there has been no physical verification of attendance.

The validity of the renewal of permission will be one year as MGM Medical College will have to apply again for getting renewal of permission next year as well.
