Gandhinagar: A group of dental students was detained after they were found intoxicated with alcohol at a liquor party on Saturday, 27th November 2021.

The group comprised of 13 first-year students from the Karnavati Dental College, a private dental institute in Gandhinagar.

According to police, a raid was conducted at one of the flats in Swagat Afford Society at Sargasan in Gandhinagar by a team from Infocity police station on Saturday evening after neighbors complained of "loud music". During the raid, 13 first-year students of Karnavati Dental College in Gandhinagar were allegedly found intoxicated after consuming illicit Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL). The flat where the party was held was rented by two students while 13 were allegedly invited for the party, the Indian Express reported.

A police officer at the Infocity police station spoke to media persons and said, "All have been booked under the sections of the Prohibition Act, and Indian Penal Code sections 188 for disobedience to order given by a public servant and 269 for negligent act likely to spread infection of a disease, as well as relevant sections of the Epidemic Diseases Act."

According to Ritesh Hada, President of the Karnavati University, to which the college is affiliated released a statement saying that the incident was unfortunate and that the parents of the thirteen students have been called and directed to counsel them. He further added that the students will not be suspended as it will hamper their further education and risk their career. Furthermore, he stated that the students are young and they will be counseled.

"We will be very sensitive to such incidents in the future," Hada added.

The Karnavati School of Dentistry is a private dental institute located on the outskirts of Gandhinagar. The college offers admission into both, BDS as well as MDS courses and was established in an attempt to meet the increasing demand for dental education in India.
