Imphal: Amid the ongoing protests by the medical, dental, nursing, and paramedical students at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, accusing the institute's Director of mental harassment and abuse, the Dean and Sub-Dean stepped down from their posts by submitting their resignations.

The students were demanding the resignation of the Director, who allegedly asked them to "dance naked" and "commit suicide". Apart from the Director, the students also demanded the immediate removal of the Dean and Sub-Dean for their silence regarding the students' complaints.

Even though Dean (Academics) Prof. Th. Meera Devi and Sub Dean (Students Affairs) Dr. Laishram Trinity Meetei have officially resigned from their posts, the students are not ready to call off their protest as their main demand for the removal of the Director from his post is still pending.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that the students at RIMS Imphal had accused the institute's Director of mental harassment and abuse, including allegedly asking students to "dance naked, commit suicide" and threatening to "hang them."

Shocked and outraged, students staged a large protest march from the All Manipur Students’ Union Office at DM Campus, demanding the immediate removal of the Director, along with the Dean and Sub-Dean.

Apart from alleging that the Director used abusive and threatening language towards the students and condemning the same, the students also criticised the Dean and Sub-Dean for failing to intervene. The students insisted that the silence of both officials amounted to complicity. Therefore, the students demanded that all three (the Director, Dean, and Sub-Dean) should be removed from their positions.

Recently, the Dean and Sub-Dean submitted their resignation. "The competent authority has accepted the resignation of Prof. Th. Meera Devi, and Dr. Laishram Trinity Meetei from the post of Dean (Academics) and Sub Dean (Students Affairs) respectively," the institute mentioned in the order dated 08.05.2025.

"Therefore, Prof. Th. Meera Devi, and Dr. Laishram Trinity Meetei are relieved from the charge of Dean Academics and Sub Dean (Students Affairs) respectively with immediate effect. This issues with the approval of Director, RIMS, Imphal," it further mentioned.

Sharing a copy of the order, an X (formerly Twitter) user wrote in a post, "Amidst days of relentless protest by medical, dental, nursing & paramedical students of RIMS Imphal, Dean (Academics) Prof. Th. Meera Devi & Sub Dean (Students Affairs) Dr. Laishram Trinity Meetei have officially resigned from their posts. The students' agitation erupted over serious allegations of mental harassment, humiliation, and reported coercive practices. Placards carried by students highlight disturbing concerns, including claims of being forced to strip — sparking public outrage. While the Dean & Sub Dean have stepped down, the protests continue with full intensity. The central demand now: the removal of the Director, under whose watch these incidents allegedly took place. Students vow to continue their movement until full justice is served and accountability is ensured."
