Lucknow: The Institutional Ethics Committee (IEC) of Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) has successfully completed the survey National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH) and has been awarded NABH accreditation.

SGPGIMS is one of the few institutions in the country and the only center in UP to get this accreditation. SGPGIMS, IEC performs as per the National guidelines and the Drug and Clinical Trials Rules of the Govt. of India.

"This has been possible with the support from the Director, Prof R K Dhiman and efforts of all including Chairman, Dr Chandishwar Nath, Member Secretary Prof Vinita Agrawal, members of the committee and the staff of Bioethics Cell, SGPGIMS", the institution stated in its recent release.

Prof Vinita Agrawal, Member Secretary, informed that SGPGIMS has one of the oldest IEC which was constituted in 1988. With the contribution of all including the previous chairman, Late Prof BN Dhawan, the IEC has maintained a rich tradition of following guidelines and upholding the interests and safety of participants. About 350 projects including clinical trials are reviewed each year.
The IEC, SGPGIMS has also received international recognition and has been awarded consecutively three times with the prestigious award from International Forum for Ethical Review Committees in Asia and the Western Pacific Region (FERCAP) in 2011, 2015 and 2018. The IEC has its own SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures). The members of IEC are aware and trained to follow the guidelines for the proper functioning of the IEC.

Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences has been established under the State Legislature Act in 1983 and it provides postgraduate training to medical and nonmedical professionals. The training programs lead to D.M., M.Ch., M.D., Ph.D., postdoctoral fellowships, postdoctoral certificate courses in various disciplines.
