Silchar: After being unable to cope with depression, a final-year medical student of Silchar Medical College and Hospital reportedly took his life by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his house.

In two separate suicide notes recovered by the police, the student apologised to his mother saying "Mother, forgive me. I am leaving you today. I am unable to handle the depression and I feel a pain near my chest." On another note, he said, "I am willingly committing suicide, nobody is responsible for my suicide."

According to the police, the student was suffering from acute depression and held no one responsible for his suicide note. Although the student's handwriting was confirmed by his family members, the police have still sent them to forensics for verification.

As per TOI news report, on Tuesday evening at around 8.30 pm, the student told his mother that he was going downstairs for a walk but instead went to the first floor and locked himself in a room. The incident came to light when the mother received no response from him despite calling him repeatedly. She noticed that the door was locked from inside. Following this, the neighbours rushed to their house and broke open the door only to find him hanging from the ceiling fan.

Later, the police rushed to the spot along with a magistrate and a preliminary investigation was conducted. The deceased was the only son of his late father and mother who were supposed to head for Bengaluru that day.

A police official told NDTV, "Prima facie, it appears to be a case of death by suicide." His body was sent for postmortem examination and a case was registered. Further, investigation is underway.

“The investigation is ongoing, but preliminary findings suggest that the student’s mental health struggles may have played a significant role in this tragic event,” said another police officer.

His unfortunate death has shocked many including Bibek Sen, the general secretary of the students' union and a batchmate of the deceased who told the Assam Tribune that "the student was academically strong but he was a reserved and anxious individual. We are in deep shock. He was an introvert but we never imagined he would take such a decision. Our thoughts and prayers are with his mother and family."
