Jaipur: Instances of ragging in medical colleges are rising at an alarming rate, and such an incident at Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Medical College in Jaipur has recently been reported. A first-year MBBS student has filed a formal complaint against his seniors, accusing them of physically and mentally harassing him and his batchmates.

After receiving the complaint, the college administration took strict action and informed the anti-ragging committee. Following an investigation, 16 second-year students and one intern were found guilty of ragging and have been suspended accordingly. They are barred from attending classes until further notice.

In the complaint, the student alleged that the seniors often harassed him and his batchmates. He claimed that the seniors repeatedly asked them to state their names, forced them to sing songs, and made them perform the ‘murga’ punishment pose. The student said this caused him severe mental stress.

Distressed by the harassment, the student lodged an online complaint on the National Medical Commission (NMC) anti-ragging portal. After being notified, the SMS College administration formed an anti-ragging committee to investigate the matter.

As per the Bhaskar news report, the committee, as part of the investigation, questioned the students involved with the case and confirmed that 17 students were involved with the ragging. Based on this, the college suspended them.

Dr Monika Jain, Chairperson of the Anti-Ragging Committee and Additional Principal, told Bhaskar, "The parents of all suspended students had been informed. Hostel wardens have also been directed to maintain special vigilance to prevent further incidents of ragging."
