Gandhinagar: Taking action against 14 MBBS students after receiving ragging complaints from the juniors, the administration of Gujarat Medical Education and Research Society (GMERS) Medical College, Gandhinagar, suspended them. Seven third-year students have been suspended for two years, and 7 other second-year students for six months.
The decision came after an enquiry ordered by the college found the accused students guilty of harassing and mentally torturing their juniors.
In a written complaint to the hostel dean, the juniors said that a group of seniors had called them for an “introduction session” soon after they shifted to the hostel. During this session, the seniors allegedly made insulting comments and mentally harassed at least one fresher.
Following the complaint, the college administration reviewed CCTV footage from the hostel, which clearly showed the 14 senior students ragging the juniors. Based on the evidence that confirmed their presence in the scene, the college authorities summoned the parents of all students involved. After a detailed review, the authorities decided to suspend seven third-year students for two years and the second-year students for six months, as per Ahmedabad Mirror news report.
Speaking in this regard to the Indian Express, Health Minister Praful Pansheriya said, "Seven third-year students and seven second-year students were harassing and mentally torturing first-year students – all at GMERS Medical College, Gandhinagar. After receiving the complaint, an immediate investigation was conducted, and the seven third-year students involved in this incident were rusticated from the hostel for two years, and the other seven second-year students for six months."
"The CCTV camera footage was checked after receiving the complaint of ragging. The seniors behaved antisocially and immorally with first-year students. All the guilty students have been strictly directed to improve their behaviour. I request the students not to harass or hurt anyone. It is not right for you to harass anyone. When you are going to become a respected doctor, you should also have humanity in you; only then will you be able to serve truly. Such an incident should not happen in other colleges. If the state government receives even a small complaint, immediate action will definitely be taken on it, which will also affect students’ careers," he added.
Medical Dialogues had reported that GMERS Medical College, Dharpur, suspended 15 MBBS students for two years and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh each after some junior students, including the deceased student, were forced to stand for around three hours and introduce themselves individually. They were also allegedly forced to sing and dance, utter abusive words and not leave the room. After this, one student's health deteriorated. He fainted and fell unconscious at around midnight. He was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.
