Soon: Jamshedpur to get 2nd Medical College with 100 MBBS seats

Jamshedpur- In order to enhance medical education in Jharkhand, a second government medical college is soon going to be established in East Singhbhum district. As per the plans, the college will be established within the premises of Khasmahal Sadar Hospital.

The proposed medical college at Khasmahal Sadar Hospital aims to offer MBBS studies with an initial capacity of 100 seats.

This initiative is a part of a broader strategy to expand Sadar hospitals in districts such as Khunti, Bokaro, Sahibganj, Ramgarh, and Giridih of Jharkhand to include a few more medical colleges.

As per the recent media news report by Avenue Mail, in February this year, the Jharkhand Health Department submitted a proposal to the National Medical Commission (NMC) for consideration. Therefore, a comprehensive inspection of Jamshedpur Sadar Hospital has been conducted recently to collect all the required information for NMC and obtain the necessary Letter of Permission (LOP) for setting up this new medical college. The inspection was carried out by Jamshedpur Health Secretary Ajay Kumar Singh, where he evaluated the infrastructure and facilities at the Sadar hospitals in support of this expansion.

To obtain a license for a new medical college, certain criteria need to be followed such as infrastructure, facilities and especially the hospital should have a minimum of 320 beds.

At present, Jharkhand offers several medical colleges located in Dhanbad, Ranchi, Dumka, Palamu, Hazaribagh, and MGM in Jamshedpur. However, the aim of establishing this new medical colleges in Bokaro, Ramgarh, Sahibganj, Khunti and Giridih is to meet the educational needs of the students of the state more effectively.

Furthermore, plans are underway to enhance the infrastructure of Sadar hospitals across multiple districts, ensuring compliance with standards. Initiatives include the provision of essential facilities such as blood banks, ICUs, dialysis centers, and oxygen plants. Proposals for installing CT scan and MRI machines have been forwarded to the state headquarters.

The journey of Sadar Hospital commenced in January 2013 with 48 patients, evolving over the years to accommodate over 700 patients daily. Notable milestones include the establishment of a TB testing center in January 2017, a blood bank in October 2019, and the subsequent addition of a children’s ward, ICU, dialysis center, and oxygen plant
