Thiruvananthapuram: In an unfortunate incident, a 22-year-old medical student of Sree Gokulam Medical College, Venjaramoodu succumbed to her injuries on Friday sustained after falling from the fourth floor of the college hostel on December 2. 

According to the police investigation, the student was suffering from depression which is suspected to have triggered the student into taking the extreme step. Reportedly, she was under anti-depression medication.

The cops suspect that the student had committed suicide by jumping off the building. However, the cause of the incident is unclear and will only be determined through the postmortem report.

The deceased has been identified as a her third year in MBBS student at the medical college. 

The incident occurred at 3:30 pm when the student reached the college hostel with her mother to collect her belongings as she had shifted to a house nearby with her mother 10 days before the incident. Her mother was waiting for her downstairs. 

When her mother noticed that she was being late, she went upstairs and found her injured near the hostel building. She immediately rushed her to the hospital where she was undergoing treatment in the ICU. Sadly, she could not survive any longer and died on Friday. 

Following this, a case has been registered under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) for unnatural death. Acting on the FIR, the police have launched an investigation into the case. 

Speaking to TOI, her father said “Police are trying to make the case a suicide and we must be ensured justice through a transparent probe."

Dr P V Benny, HoD of community medicine at college, told TNIE "Her parents had moved in with her. Adithi was on medication for depression. She had come to the hostel to take her belongings. Her mother was waiting in the hall when she took the extreme step."
