Violence in Manipur: Churachandpur Medical College Students to Attend Classes at JNIMS Imphal

Imphal: Considering the devastating violence in Manipur, the administrative authorities have decided that the offline classes for first-year MBBS students of Churachandpur Medical College would be conducted both at the medical institute along with Imphal-based Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS).

The college authorities announced this decision after the National Medical Commission (NMC) allowed offline classes for the 1st year MBBS students of the medical college to be conducted at JLIMS Imphal, along with the medical college campus at Churachandpur.

Earlier, the students had approached the authorities raising this issue. They had expressed their fear, distress, and anxiety and demanded the State Government secure a place to continue their studies.

As per the latest media report by Imphal Free Press, last Saturday, a team of students from the medical college approached Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey at Raj Bhawan and submitted a memorandum.

The students had expressed their concerns regarding the delay of their annual academic pursuits. Further, they had also requested a safe location at the earliest so that they could continue their studies.

Further, referring to the prevailing situation in Manipur, the students had urged the Governor to ensure that the physical and practical classes are conducted in Imphal.

Responding to their requests, the governor expressed concern about the students belonging to Manipur. Besides, the Governor had assured the students that probable measures would be taken up to normalise conducting of classes. In this regard, the Governor further informed how steps are being taken to put a stop to violence, restore peace and bring back normalcy in the State.

Apart from the Governor of the State, the students also submitted memorandum to the Health Minister Sapam Ranjan. In turn, the Health Minister assured the students that they will commence their courses at the earliest. 

The Assam Tribune adds that the Director of CMC S. Iboyaima on Thursday informed that considering the current law and order situation in Manipur, NMC gave its permission for conducting the first-year MBBS classes at JNIMS Imphal and CMC.

This new arrangement would continue until the situation of the State returns back to normal. The offline classes at these two medical colleges would commence from June 19.

Further, the Director informed that the students have been asked to opt for the college where they want to attend the classes at their convenience. 

Earlier on May 3, ethnic violence erupted in Manipur hundreds of students, government employees and other people hailing from seven northeastern and other states across the country were rescued by their respective state government authorities.
