NEET PG Application Deadline Ends, KNRUHS medicos lose one academic year

Hyderabad: Thousands of MBBS students belonging to Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences (KNRUHS) missed their opportunity of appearing in the NEET PG 2023 examination since the application gateway closed on January 27 and these medicos remained ineligible due to the MBBS Internship completion deadline.

While the National Board of Examinations (NBE) has prescribed the Internship Deadline as June 30, 2023, around 3000-4000 MBBS KNRUHS medicos will complete their internship in August.

Despite their request to the authorities, no relief was granted to these students, who are now facing the loss of an entire academic year.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that around 3000 NEET PG aspirants were facing uncertainty regarding their future since KNRUHS extended the internship of MBBS students till August 11.

The MBBS Interns belonging to Osmania, Gandhi, Kakatoya and several private medical colleges had urged the Health Minister T Harish Rao for ensuring that the NEET PG 2023 exam gets postponed and hundreds of MBBS Students in the State do not lose their academic year.

In fact, the Minister had reportedly assured to take up the issue with the Union Government for protecting the interests of thousands of students in the State. However, the application deadline ended on January 27, 2023 and these medicos could not apply for the PG medical entrance examination.

National Board of examinations (NBE) had earlier announced that NEET PG 2023 will be held on 5th March 2023. The result will be declared By 31st March 2023. As per the previous eligibility criteria announced by NBE, the NEET PG 2023 candidates must complete their mandatory one-year MBBS internship on or before March 31.

However, Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that due to this Internship Deadline, hundreds of students were facing year loss since they were unable to fulfill the eligibility criteria of completing the MBBS internship within March 31.

After various representations from doctors and organizations, finally NBE offered to relief to the NEET PG aspirants and extended the Internship Deadline to June 30, 2023.

In case of Telangana, the matter remained unsolved since KNRUHS has extended the internship deadline of MBBS students till August 11, 2023. While altogether 3000 students are affected by this, Kakatiya Medical College (KMC) alone has about 200 interns who are now ineligible for writing the PG medical entrance test.

As per the latest media report by the New Indian Express, in case of KNRUHS, the correction of exam papers got delayed and the results of the final exam were announced late by KNRUHS. This resulted in the extension of the Internship till August 11 and the future of approximately 3,000-4,000 students in the State became uncertain.

Referring to the situation the President of Telangana Junior Doctors Association told the daily, “The members of Telangana Junior Doctors Association met Health Minister T Harish Rao on Wednesday, requesting him to impress on the Central government the need to allow the students to appear for the admission test. The minister asked Health Secretary Syed Ali Murtaza Rizvi to write another representation to the Centre.”

Earlier, the students, doctors organisations and KNRUHS had sent representations to the Union Health Minister for postponing the exam, However there was no response regarding this.

“The university and the State government have to own the responsibility for the delay in conducting the final-year exams last year. It is their duty to take the initiative to talk to the National Medical Commission, Union health ministry and make arrangements for the postponement,” Dr Karthik further mentioned adding that TJUDA has decided to fight for justice of KNRUHS students.

Just like MBBS students around 1000 dental students in the State are facing the same situation as they are ineligible to appear for NEET MDS due to the Internship Deadline.

Speaking about this, a dental student from Achamoet town in Nagarkurnool district and the National President of All India Dental Students Association, Dr Md Manzur told the daily, “The internship period for NEET MDS was not extended from March 31. We will be finishing our internships on April 11, just 11-12 days after the deadline.”

The deadline for applying in the NEET MDS ends on January 31, 2023. AIDSA has tried several times by sending representation to extend the cut-off date of internship. If they do not receive any response, the dental students are planning to hold a protest in front of the NBE office in Delhi.
