NMC approved 265 of 443 medical college applications in 5 years, 43 in 2025-26: Govt tells Parliament

New Delhi: According to information shared by the National Medical Commission (NMC), a total of 443 applications were received over the last five years for establishing new medical colleges, out of which 265 were approved, Union Minister of State for Health Smt Anupriya Patel informed the Lok Sabha recently.

As per the data, the Minister informed that 82 applications were received and 48 were approved in the academic year 2021–22, 83 applications were received and 46 were approved in the academic year 2022–23, 86 applications were received and 54 were approved in the year 2023–24, 112 applications were received and 74 were approved in the academic year 2024–25 and 80 applications were received and 43 were approved in the academic year 2025–26.

The data was presented in Parliament in response to queries raised by two Members of Parliament regarding the number of medical colleges permitted to be opened by the National Medical Commission during the last five years, the number of applications received by the NMC for opening new medical colleges during the last five years and whether the National Medical Commission also permits private applicants to open deemed medical colleges in the country.

In response, Patel informed, "As informed by National Medical Commission (NMC), the total number of applications received and approved for the establishment of new medical colleges by NMC during the last five years are as under:"

Patel further informed that As per section 4 of Chapter-II of the Establishment of New Medical Institutions, Starting of New Medical Courses, Increase of Seats for Existing Courses & Assessment and Rating Regulations, 2023, "No Medical College or medical institutions can be established, or new medical course or courses be started unless it is granted permission by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) in writing, in response to an application submitted in this regard."
