NMC approves 100 MBBS seats at Idukki Medical College
Thiruvananthapuram: Catering to the long pending demand for Idukki Medical College in Kerala's high range district, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has recently given its permission to the medical college for 100 MBBS seats, for which the State Government had been trying for the past few years.
Confirming the news regarding the NMC nod, the State Government has assured that all the required procedures would be completed at the earliest and steps would be taken to begin classes by this year itself, adds PTI.
The Idukki Medical College, which began its operations during the time of the previous Congress-UDF government with 50 MBBS students at first, had lost the then Medical Council of India (MCI) recognition in the year 2016 during the LDF Government reign as it didn't have any adequate amenities including required number of beds, academic block, staffs and accommodation facilities for students and employees. At that time, the students who were already admitted to the medical college got shifted to Alappuzha medical college.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that back in 2020 the MCI Board of Governors secretary-general Dr RK Vats had submitted a letter to the medical college mentioning seven defects and inconsistencies in the administration which include residents (58%), bed occupancy (29.3%), faculty (18%) clinical lab and radiological investigation at the hospital.
Finally, the Idukki Medical College has been approved by NMC and informing the media about this new development, Health Minister Veena George said the state government has arranged all required facilities, appointed enough staff and started IP (in-patient) services after completing the construction of the new building.
''It is a great achievement that sanction has been received now for 100 seats. It was just 50 before,'' the minister told PTI. The government's plan is to bring more advanced facilities at the medical college in the coming days, she added.
As per the latest media report by The Hindu, the Health Minister recently issued a statement in this regard and said that the new medical college is expected to play a major role in catering to the healthcare requirements of the people in the high range belt.
The Statement further mentioned that the medical college hospital currently has a new new emergency wing, along with new diagnostic facilities, including CT scan, digital Xray, mammography, computerised radiography and a modern blood bank. The Government has issued directions for speedy construction process to ensure that the new facilities get started at the earliest.
