Mumbai: Giving the medical aspirants in Maharashtra a reason to rejoice, the National Medical Commission has given its approval for the Government Medical College, Sindhudurg.

A total number of 100 MBBS seats would be added to the medical college, which had faced a roadblock after NMC had halted its approval last year.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that the National Medical Commission had inspected the medical college in August 2021 and it had sent the inspection report to the Central Government as well.

Even though, the medical aspirants were counting on 100 more MBBS seats from GMC Sindhudurg, NMC, the apex medical regulatory body had halted the approval of the medical college in September last year.

The Commission had pointed out several deficiencies in the proposal and had temporarily put a stopper on the medical college and hospital. In fact, NMC had given the state government a period of three weeks to meet the requirements of the project. An official had earlier informed that the deficiencies, which had been pointed out by NMC were mainly technical and not related to the college's infrastructure.

Thereafter, the medical education department of the State had assured of taking every possible measure to look at the shortcomings and comply with all the norms.

As per the latest media report by the Times of India, now the apex medical body NMC has given its approval for GMC Sindhudurg. Following this, 100 more MBBS seats would be added to the State.

This is expected to bring great relief to the medical aspirants and their parents, who were hopeful that the affiliation formalities with the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences would be completed by the time for admissions.

As per the data provided by the MoS Health Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar last year, Maharashtra had a total number of 57 medical colleges including 26 government-run institutes and 31 medical colleges run by private management. According to the last year's data, Maharashtra had a total number of 9000 MBBS seats including 4430 seats belonging to the Government institutes.
