NMC conducts inspection of 3 Maharashtra Medical Colleges for 100 MBBS seats each
Pune: Bringing good news to the MBBS aspirants in the State, Maharashtra Government is all set to set up three new medical colleges soon, whose inspection was recently conducted by the National Medical Commission (NMC).
On August 11 and 12, a panel from the apex medical education regulatory body, NMC has already inspected the three upcoming colleges located at Satara (Pune region), Alibaug and Sindhudurg and have sent their reports to the Central Government as well.
With the nod from NMC, these medical colleges with minimum 100 MBBS seats each, are likely to commence from this academic year onwards. NMC mainly inspects the infrastructure and manpower of a medical institute before giving it a nod for running an MBBS course.
As per the data revealed by the Health Minister of State, Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar, the state already has 26 Government medical colleges providing UG medical courses and with an intake capacity of 4430 seats in the Government institutes.
Indian Express, in a recent media report, has mentioned that the construction work at Krishna Nagar in Satara is expected to commence soon after a 62 acres land was acquired for the proposed college. Currently, the State health department has handed over the 350-bed Satara Civil Hospital, which has also developed a 300-bed district Covid facility, to the medical education department.
With this, the Satara Civil Hospital has been transformed into a teaching facility and now it gets controlled by DMER, instead of the Health Department.
While speaking to the daily, Dean of the Satara Government medical college Dr Sanjay Gaikwad informed that the NMC panel has expressed its satisfaction with the infrastructure of the college. The upcoming medical college in Satara is an ambitious project as previously Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar had assured granting adequate funding for the construction of the college.
"We have infrastructure like lecture halls, laboratory and even a library with 3,000 books," Dr Gaikwad mentioned. The new building will be set up in the acquired land and there is a proposal for setting up a 500-bed hospital also.
On the other hand, mentioning that government college in Alibaug is going to be the first government-run medical college in Konkan region, Dean Dr. Girish Thakur said, "The NMC team (recently) visited Alibaug and took stock of the facilities."
In this case as well, the civil hospital of Alibaug has been handed over to DMER by the Health Department. For the upcoming project, a new 500-bed hospital has been proposed along with a new college building at Usar village.
While commenting on this matter, Dr Dileep Mhaisekar, Director, Medical Education and Research (DMER), told The Indian Express, "Efforts are underway to start three new medical colleges at Satara, Alibaug and Sindhudurg. Inspections have been conducted by the panel from the National Medical Commission and reports have been sent to the Centre."
"Three (more colleges) have been proposed and a minimum of 100 seats will be introduced in each college," he added.
