NMC gives permission for 150 MBBS seats at Haveri Institute of Medical Sciences

Haveri: Fulfilling the long standing public demands, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has now given its approval for the Haveri Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS) in Karnataka.

With the nod from the Apex Medical Body, the college will commence admissions in 150 medical seats from the academic years 2022-2023, adds TOI.

NMC's nod comes after it visited the colleges, and inspected the arrangements made by HIMS. The college has temporarily arranged for the classes at the government engineering college classrooms.

Medical Dialogues had reported last year that the medical college in Haveri was one of the four medical colleges in Karnataka that failed to get permission from the National Medical Commission (NMC).

Back then, the 'No' from NMC came after a team of the Apex Medical Body inspected the colleges and expressed its objection to the lack of infrastructure including the scarcity of buildings, staff etc. In fact, NMC had also objected to initiating operations from a private building.

However, the HIMS authorities had reported assured the NMC by writing to them and they had claimed that basic facilities would be provided to the institute within a year.

As per the latest media report by the Times of India, before giving its nod, the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of NMC reviewed commissioner assessor's report in the review in March, and remarks of undergraduate experts group on the infrastructure facilities of the college available at HIMS under Rajeev Gandhi University of Health Sciences.

In fact, the Commission's nod has been given with a condition that HIMS would comply with the NMC norms and provide all infrastructural facilities in respect to teaching and non-teaching staff, building, equipment and hospital facilities. It has also been clarified by MARB that no student gets admitted until the Board gives formal permission in this regard.

Speaking to TOI regarding the issue, the Dean of HIMS said, "The NMC has accepted our request for starting the academic session from this year at HIMS. It's happy news for all the students who are aspirants to join MBBS, and also the people of Haveri district, because they would get quality treatment. We have made temporary arrangements at the government engineering college for classrooms."

Meanwhile, the Nodal officer of HIMS, and ZP CEO of Haveri informed the daily that the college building would be ready by the end of the year. Expressing his home for getting NMC nod to start MBBS course from this academic year, he further added, "We are committed to adhere to the norms imposed by the NMC, and will provide basic facilities to the institute. As many as 150 medical seats will help poor talented students. We are thankful to the NMC authorities and the state government for giving us this opportunity from this year."
