Panaji: Bringing good news to the doctors who wish to pursue higher education in Goa, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has given its approval for 10 new superspecialty seats in Goa Medical College.

These new super specialty seats have been added to six departments including cardiothoracic surgery, urology, plastic surgery, cardiology, cardiac anesthesia and nephrology.

Goa Medical College is run by the Government and it is one of the oldest medical colleges in Asia. Established back in 1691, this medical college is associated with Goa University.

It offers both UG and PG medical courses including 180 MBBS, 31 MD, 13 MS, and 30 Diploma seats.

As per the latest media report by the Times of India, now NMC, the apex medical education regulatory body in India has given its nod for 10 new super-specialty seats in the institute in 6 departments including cardiothoracic surgery, urology, plastic surgery, cardiology, cardiac anesthesia, and nephrology.

Among these, cardiothoracic surgery, urology, and plastic surgery departments will offer MCh degrees, and cardiology, cardiac anesthesia, and nephrology will offer DM degrees to the doctors.

These courses will commence in March.

Speaking to TOI regarding the matter, dean Dr S M Bandekar said the NMC nod for new super-specialty courses is an "achievement for GMC", which will ultimately provide a boost to the medical students in Goa.

Doctorate of Medicine (DM) and Master of Chirurgiae (MCh) are postgraduate diploma degrees awarded respectively in medical and surgical super specialties.

MCh degree is the most advanced qualification in surgery and in order to pursue it, having a medical degree is mandatory. Similarly, DM or Doctorate of Medicine is a PG super specialty degree course with duration of three years. It can be pursued after completing an MD or DNB degree.
