NMC nod to 150 MBBS Seats to private medical college in Kancheepuram

Chennai: Another 150 MBBS seats have now been added to the seat matrix of Tamil Nadu since the National Medical Commission has given its approval for a new self-financing medical college, PSP Medical College and Research Institute in Kancheepuram. 

With the NMC nod for this new medical college, which will be affiliated to Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University, the total number of MBBS seats in Tamil Nadu will increase further by 150 MBBS seats.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that the Health Ministry had shared the data regarding the number of MBBS and PG medical seats available in the country. As per the Health Ministry's data, Tamil Nadu has the highest number of 11,275 MBBS seats in the country.

The State of Tamil Nadu has altogether 72 medical colleges including 37 state-run, one centrally-run AIIMS, Madurai, 20 self-financing and12 deemed universities.

While several private medical colleges are still awaiting permission from NMC, this year, the State Government will not have any new colleges, adds TOI. 

It has been confirmed by the State Directorate of Medical Education. Officials have informed that the State is waiting for funding from the Central Government for commencing construction of the new medical colleges.

Officials in the state directorate of medical education confirmed that the state will not start these colleges this year. The state says it is waiting for funding to come from the centre to start construction of the new colleges, officials said.

However, on Tuesday, the State Health Minister Ma Subramanian informed that the State had applied for obtaining permission from the Central Government to start new medical colleges in six district, adds the Times of India.

 "We will start work including construction of buildings only after that," added the Health Minister.

Back in 2021, the State had 11 new medical colleges and after that, plans were underway for adding six more medical colleges in Perambalur, Mayiladuthurai, Tirupathur, Ranipet, Kancheepuram and Kallakurichi.
