Chennai: 6,306 MD, MS, Diploma, DM and MCh medical seats are available in Tamil Nadu for the academic year 2026-27, as per the National Medical Commission (NMC) seat matrix.

Medical Dialogues had reported that the NMC on September 29 released a seat matrix showing a total of 63,177 MD, MS, Diploma, DM, and MCh medical seats for the academic year 2026-27. However, the NMC has clarified that the latest seat matrix does not include the seats in respect of applications received for an increase in intake of existing PG courses or for the commencement of new PG courses for the Academic Year 2026–27.

As per the list, MD General Medicine has the highest number of seats at 625 in Tamil Nadu, followed by MS General Surgery with 621 seats and MD Anaesthesiology with 515 seats.

Several courses have only one seat each. These include DM Neuro-Radiology, DM Paediatric Oncology, Diploma in Ophthalmology (DO), Diploma in Otorhinolaryngology (DLO), Diploma in Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy (DDVL), and MCh Head and Neck Surgery.

Course-wise distribution of seats

DM courses:

According to the latest seat matrix, DM Cardiac Anaesthesia has 4 seats, DM Cardiology has 74 seats, DM Clinical Haematology has 10 seats, DM Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology has 14 seats, and DM Critical Care Medicine has 19 seats.

DM Endocrinology has 10 seats, DM Hepatology has 8 seats, DM Infectious Disease has 4 seats, DM Interventional Radiology has 4 seats, and DM Medical Gastroenterology has 50 seats.

DM Medical Oncology has 38 seats, DM Neonatology has 31 seats, DM Nephrology has 46 seats, DM Neuro-Anaesthesia has 4 seats, and DM Neurology has 84 seats.

DM Neuro-Radiology has 1 seat, DM Onco-Pathology has 2 seats, DM Paediatric Gastroenterology has 2 seats, DM Paediatric Neurology has 4 seats, DM Paediatric Oncology has 1 seat, DM Pulmonary Medicine has 5 seats and DM Virology has 4 seats.

Diploma courses:

Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy (DDVL) has 1 seat. Diploma in Anaesthesiology (DA) has 6 seats, Diploma in Clinical Pathology (DCP) has 4 seats, Diploma in Diabetology has 3 seats and Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (DGO) has 3 seats.

Diploma in Ophthalmology (DO) has 1 seat, Diploma in Orthopaedics (DOrth) has 3 seats, Diploma in Otorhinolaryngology (DLO) has 1 seat, and Diploma in Paediatrics (DCH) has 3 seats.

MCh courses:

MCh Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery has 29 seats, MCh Endocrine Surgery has 4 seats, MCh Gynaecological Oncology has 3 seats, MCh Hand Surgery has 6 seats, and MCh Head and Neck Surgery has 1 seat.

MCh Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery has 2 seats, MCh Neuro Surgery (6 years) has 2 seats, MCh Neurosurgery has 52 seats, MCh Paediatric Orthopaedics has 2 seats, and MCh Paediatric Surgery has 28 seats.

MCh Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery has 51 seats, MCh Reproductive Medicine and Surgery has 5 seats, MCh Surgical Gastroenterology has 27 seats, MCh Surgical Oncology has 32 seats, MCh Urology has 60 seats, and MCh Vascular Surgery has 20 seats.

MD courses:

MD Anaesthesiology has 515 seats, MD Anatomy has 92 seats, MD Biochemistry has 109 seats, and MD Community Medicine/Social & Preventive Medicine has 174 seats.

MD Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy/Dermatology has 204 seats, MD Emergency Medicine has 148 seats, MD Family Medicine has 6 seats, and MD Forensic Medicine and Toxicology/Forensic Medicine has 63 seats.

MD General Medicine has the highest number of seats among all the listed courses, with 625 seats. MD Geriatrics has 18 seats, MD Immuno Haematology and Blood Transfusion has 29 seats, and MD Laboratory Medicine has 4 seats.

MD Microbiology has 131 seats, MD Nuclear Medicine has 2 seats, MD Paediatrics has 420 seats, MD Pathology has 235 seats, and MD Pharmacology has 100 seats.

MD Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation has 19 seats, MD Physiology has 93 seats, MD Psychiatry has 166 seats, MD Radiation Oncology/Radiotherapy has 47 seats, and MD Radio-Diagnosis/Radiology has 285 seats.

MD Respiratory Medicine/Tuberculosis & Respiratory Diseases has 130 seats, while MD Sports Medicine has 14 seats.

MS courses:

MS General Surgery has 621 seats, making it the second-largest course by seat count. MS Obstetrics and Gynaecology has 461 seats, MS Ophthalmology has 246 seats, MS Orthopaedics has 355 seats, and MS Otorhinolaryngology/ENT has 226 seats.
