NMC seat matrix 2026-27: Karnataka tops with 8,323 PG, SS medical seats, 827 in MD medicine, 712 in MD Anaesthesiology

Bengaluru: Karnataka has the highest number of postgraduate medical seats in the country, with 8,323 MD, MS, Diploma, DM and MCh seats for the academic year 2026-2027, according to the latest seat matrix released by the National Medical Commission (NMC).
The National Medical Commission (NMC) recently released a seat matrix showing a total of 63,177 MD, MS, Diploma, DM and MCh medical seats for the academic year 2026-2027.
Across the country, Karnataka has the largest number of seats across various postgraduate and super-specialty medical courses. The seats are spread across government and deemed medical institutions in the national capital.
However, the NMC has clarified that the latest seat matrix does not include the seats in respect of applications received for an increase in intake of existing PG courses or for the commencement of new PG courses for the Academic Year 2026–27.
PG Medical Seats
As per the list, the postgraduate medical seats in Karnataka include 712 seats in M.D. Anaesthesiology, 196 seats in M.D. Anatomy, 10 seats in M.D. Aviation Medicine/Aerospace Medicine, 179 seats in M.D. Biochemistry, 244 seats in M.D. Community Medicine/Social & Preventive Medicine, 300 seats in M.D. Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy/Dermatology, 107 seats in M.D. Emergency Medicine, 3 seats in M.D. Family Medicine, 128 seats in M.D. Forensic Medicine and Toxicology/Forensic Medicine, 827 seats in M.D. General Medicine, 11 seats in M.D. Geriatrics, 14 seats in M.D. Hospital Administration, 9 seats in M.D. Immuno Haematology and Blood Transfusion, 206 seats in M.D. Microbiology, 583 seats in M.D. Paediatrics, 2 seats in M.D. Palliative Medicine, 450 seats in M.D. Pathology, 196 seats in M.D. Pharmacology, 5 seats in M.D. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, 195 seats in M.D. Physiology, 204 seats in M.D. Psychiatry, 45 seats in M.D. Radiation Oncology/Radiotherapy, 471 seats in M.D. Radio-Diagnosis/Radiology, 139 seats in M.D. Respiratory Medicine/Tuberculosis & Respiratory Diseases, and 2 seats in M.D. Sports Medicine.
The M.S. courses include 676 seats in M.S. General Surgery, 615 seats in M.S. Obstetrics and Gynaecology, 339 seats in M.S. Ophthalmology, 551 seats in M.S. Orthopaedics and 309 seats in M.S. Otorhinolaryngology/ENT.
The diploma courses include 2 seats in Diploma in Clinical Pathology (D.C.P.), 10 seats in Diploma in Ophthalmology (D.O.), 1 seat in Diploma in Psychiatry (D.P.M.), 3 seats in Diploma in Public Health (D.P.H.), 3 seats in Diploma in Radio-therapy (D.M.R.T.) and 1 seat in Diploma in Tuberculosis and Chest Diseases (D.T.C.D.).
Super Specialty Medical Seats
The D.M. courses include 13 seats in D.M. Cardiac Anaesthesia, 71 seats in D.M. Cardiology, 2 seats in D.M. Clinical Haematology, 3 seats in D.M. Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology, 14 seats in D.M. Critical Care Medicine, 19 seats in D.M. Endocrinology, 2 seats in D.M. Infectious Disease, 2 seats in D.M. Interventional Radiology, 24 seats in D.M. Medical Gastroenterology, 2 seats in D.M. Medical Genetics, 27 seats in D.M. Medical Oncology, 10 seats in D.M. Neonatology, 40 seats in D.M. Nephrology, 31 seats in D.M. Neurology, 10 seats in D.M. Onco-Pathology, 2 seats in D.M. Paediatric Cardiology, 3 seats in D.M. Paediatric Nephrology, 2 seats in D.M. The M.Ch. courses include 20 seats in M.Ch. Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, 4 seats in M.Ch. Gynaecological Oncology, 2 seats in M.Ch. Hand Surgery, 8 seats in M.Ch. Head and Neck Surgery, 2 seats in M.Ch. Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery, 34 seats in M.Ch. Neurosurgery, 5 seats in M.Ch. Paediatric Orthopaedics, 30 seats in M.Ch. Paediatric Surgery, 48 seats in M.Ch. Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 3 seats in M.Ch. Reproductive Medicine and Surgery, 12 seats in M.Ch. Surgical Gastroenterology, 38 seats in M.Ch. Surgical Oncology, 75 seats in M.Ch. Urology, and 6 seats in M.Ch. Vascular Surgery.
