Patna: The undergraduate seats in Bihar is likely to increase further as the State Cabinet has given its nod for setting up a Government Medical College and Hospital in Supaul district of the state.
Approving the proposal for building the GMC, the state has sanctioned Rs 603.68 crores for the purpose, adds HT.
The cabinet released the money after the model steemit received technical approval from Bihar Medical Services and Infrastructure Corporation, Ltd, adds Hindustan.
Confirmation regarding this came from the Additional Chief Secretary of the cabinet S Siddhartha, who informed the Press regarding the cabinet nod for 24 proposals of various departments.
Now, with the approval from the state cabinet, the Health Department will initiate the process for building the medical college at once, adds Hindustan.
Supaul is one of the 25 districts of Bihar, which does not have any medical colleges. Last year, while providing details regarding the medical colleges in Bihar, the Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya had stated that among the 13 districts in the State which have medical colleges, Patna has the highest number of medical colleges, i.e. 5.
Apart from Patna, the other districts which have functioning medical colleges are Bhagalpur, Darbhanga, Gaya, Katihar, Kishanganj, Madhepura, Madhubani, Muzaffarpur, Nalanda, Rohtas, Saharsa, and West Champaran.
Back then, the Union Health Minister had confirmed before the Lok Sabha that 8 new medical colleges would be set up in the State under the centrally sponsored scheme.
"Under Phase I of the Scheme, three medical colleges at -Purnia, Saran and Samastipur districts of Bihar were sanctioned at a cost of Rs. 189 crore each. In Phase II of the Scheme, five medical colleges at - Sitamarhi, Jaanjharpur, Siwan, Buxar, and Jamui districts of Bihar were sanctioned at a unit cost of Rs. 250 crore each. The entire Central Share for Phase I and Phase II colleges has been released to the State Government in respect of the colleges sanctioned," Minister Mandaviya had announced at that time.
