New Delhi: While considering the plea by the National Medical Commission seeking an extension of the admission deadline in respect of the post-graduate medical courses this year, the Supreme Court has granted a one-time extension till October 10, 2023.

The Apex Court bench took this decision while considering the plea by NMC, which sought a one-time extension of the deadline for concluding the post-graduate medical courses’ admission process for 2023-2024.

Granting the extension, the Apex Court bench of Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud, Justice J.B. Pardiwala, and Justice Manoj Misra allowed the post-graduation admission process to be continued till October 10.

"In the facts and circumstances which have been narrated in the application, particularly the delays which took place in the previous schedule on account of the onset of Covid-19, a one-time extension is granted until 10 October 2023 as proposed by the Director of Health Services," ordered the Court.

Similar relief was granted by the Apex Court last year as well. Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that last year the Supreme Court allowed an application filed by NMC and gave its nod for extending the cut-off date for PG medical admissions for the academic year 2022-2023 until November 25, 2022.

Last year NMC, the Apex medical education regulatory body, approached the Apex court with its application for extending the cut-off date on the ground of the messed up academic calendar due to the pandemic.

As per the latest media report by Verdictum, in the order dated January 18, 2016, the Supreme Court had given its approval for a detailed schedule for the admission process in the various medical courses as per the 'Establishment of Medical College Regulations, (Amendment), 2015'. The 2015 Regulations amended the 1999 Regulations. In this case, the petitioners earlier had filed the notifications issued by the Medical Council of India (MCI) with the previous sanction of the Central Government before the Supreme Court.

According to the notification, a detailed time schedule for the admission process in MBBS and Post-graduation medical courses was stipulated with deadlines. The time schedule for receipt of applications for opening of postgraduate (super speciality) courses/increase of admission capacity and processing of the applications by the Central Government and Medical Council Of India clarified that in any circumstances, the last date for admission/joining will not be extended after 31st May.

Further, the time schedule for completion of the Admission Process for PG (Super specialty) Medical Courses stated that in any circumstances, the last date for admission/ joining will not be extended after 31st August.
