NEET PG: SC allows NMC Plea to Extend last date for PG Medical Admissions 2022-2023
New Delhi: Allowing an application filed by the National Medical Commission (NMC), the Supreme Court today gave its nod for extending the cut-off date for Postgraduate medical admissions for the academic year 2022-2023 until November 25, 2022.
Therefore, the schedule for National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test Postgraduate Examination (NEET-PG) has now changed for the seats belonging to All India Quota as well as Deemed & Central Universities and State quota.
NMC, the Apex medical education regulatory body approached the Apex court with its application for extending the cut-off date on the ground of the messed up academic calendar due to the pandemic.
In a previous order dating back to 2016, the Supreme Court had clarified that admissions cannot be made in post-graduate medical courses after May 31 of the concerned academic year.
On the other hand, referring to the lockdown and later restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Apex medical body NMC pointed out that the counselling for the academic year 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 could not be conducted within due time. Resultantly, the commencement of the concerned academic sessions had to be postponed.

As per the latest media report by Live Law, considering the submission by the Apex medical commission, the top court bench comprising of Justices DY Chandrachud and Hima Kohli observed that the "explanation is bonafide". Therefore, the top court bench allowed NMC's application to extend the last date of admissions till November 25, 2022.
The daily adds that in an annexure, the top medical commission has proposed a new timeline for the admission schedule of 2022-2023 PG admissions. As per the timeline, October 4, 2022 was the last date of joining in the AIQ seats and Deemed & Central Universities after the First Round of Counselling. For the State quota seats, the last date is October 8.
After the completion of second round of counselling, the last date to join the seats in AIQ quota or Deemed & Central Universities is October 26, 2022. In case of the State Counselling, the cut-off date after the second round of counselling has been revised to November 2, 2022.
The Mop up round will conclude for the AIQ quota and Deemed & Central Universities on November 14, 2022. For the State quota seats, the last date to join the Mop up round seats is November 17, 2022.
However, NMC has fixed the last date of joining for all the categories after the stray vacancy round on November 25, 2022. Meanwhile, the annexure mentions that the academic session for the PG courses would commence on October 20, 2022.
