State Medical Council seeks clarification from NMC on Permanent registration for MBBS graduates from Philippines

Ahmedabad: Seeking clarification regarding the MBBS graduates from the Philippines, the Gujarat Medical Council has recently approached the National Medical Commission (NMC) and written a letter to the apex medical education regulatory body in this regard.

The matter concerns the December 2022 batch of students who have not received their permanent registration number from the apex medical commission NMC.

They have not received their registration numbers even though they studied in the same country and the same colleges like the June 2022 batch of students. In case of the June 2022 batch, they were issued their permanent registration numbers by NMC after they completed their MBBS degree in Philippines and returned back to India.

Taking note of their complaints, the State Medical Council in Gujarat has now written to NMC and sought a clarification regarding the issue.

As per the latest media report by the Times of India, sources informed the MBBS graduates from Philippines before November 18, 2021 are not liable to do the one-year internship after returning back to India. However, this rule is not applicable for students who came back in 2022.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that putting an end to all the speculations surrounding foreign medical education as well as sealing the fate of its course, the National Medical Commission had notified the National Medical Commission (Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate) Regulations, 2021.

The regulations that came into effect from 18th of November 2021, has been made be applicable to all admissions after the said date. On the issue of Grant of permanent registration to Foreign Medical Graduate, the regulations mandated several conditions. According to the NMC FMGL rules 2021, among several conditions that the FMGs need to fulfill, they also need to complete supervised internship in India for a minimum term of twelve months, after applying for the same to the Commission.

Facing difficulty to get their permanent registration from the NMC, the MBBS graduates from Philippines have made multiple complaints to the Gujarat Medical Council. The medicos pointed out that without the permanent registration numbers they are not being able to register themselves for postgraduation exams. Terming it to be disparity, the students have demanded immediate solution regarding the same.

Meanwhile, sources at the Gujarat Medical Council have informed TOI that the disparity is in the NMC rules and they have already sought a clarification from the Commission. After getting a response from the Commission, the Council will be able to issue permanent registration numbers to the foreign medical graduates.
