New Delhi- After weeks of multiple efforts to return to India from Iran, the first batch of a total of 101 medical students was finally set to arrive in Mumbai and Delhi from Armenia via Dubai on Sunday.

However, problems still arose until the very last minute, as the airline cancelled the first flight for Mumbai on Saturday, just a few hours before they were scheduled to leave their hotels in Armenia.

In the meantime, in light of the attacks and counter-attacks between Israel and Iran, the returning students were fearful for their safety. However, officials from the Indian Embassy in Iran have safely escorted the students to the neighbouring country of Armenia.

Speaking to TNIE in this regard, Dr Mohammad Momin Khan, National Vice President of the All India Medical Students Association (AIMSA), stated, “101 students took off from Yerevan International Airport at 1:25 PM (local time) on FlyDubai flight FZ8124, and they will depart from Dubai by evening. They will have a layover in Dubai, and on Sunday, at 5:05 PM local time, they will depart from there on two separate flights. One flight will arrive in Mumbai at 4:15 AM, while the other will arrive in Delhi at 9:55 AM.” Dr Mohammad Momin Khan had been coordinating with them for weeks.

After reaching Delhi, more than 50 students were to be departed for Jammu and Kashmir by bus. Most of these students were residents of Jammu and Kashmir and were pursuing their studies at Urmia University of Medical Sciences, Tehran University of Medical Sciences, and Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences. However, the exact number of students headed to Mumbai and Delhi is not yet clear.

These students were also among the more than 1,000 Indian students who were stuck in Iran. However, more than 2,000 students had already departed before the Israel-US attacks began on February 28.
