FMGs Urge TN Medical Council for Internship Allotment
Chennai: Raising the issue of delay in the allotment of registration certificates and Compulsory Rotatory Medical Internship, the medical graduates from abroad based in Tamil Nadu recently met with the State Medical Council officials.
Although earlier around 200 students had planned to protest against the Tamil Nadu Medical Council (TNMC) demanding immediate verification and internship allotment, it was later cancelled as the Council had assured them that they would be given the postings based on the vacancies.
As per the existing rules, medical graduates from abroad must clear the screening test i.e. the Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE), and thereafter undergo an internship for one/two/three years as per the National Medical Commission's guidelines. Only after completing the internship, the medical graduates from abroad get registration to practice medicine in India.
While the Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) in other States such as Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Jharkhand, and others have started the internship, the medical graduates from abroad, based in Tamil Nadu, are still waiting to get allotted to internship programmes in the State.

As per the latest media report by DT Next, the FMGs in Tamil Nadu have requested the State Health Department officials to fasten the allotment process so that they can join the internship programme at the earliest.
Meanwhile, commenting on the matter, the TNMC authorities have informed the Daily that the verification process to allot internship to the FMGs is almost complete and the internship will be allotted as per the vacancies.
Meanwhile, through a recent notice, the National Medical Commission (NMC) announced that all the medical graduates from abroad who have sufficiently compensated classes in physical onsite in lieu of the online classes and who have cleared the equivalent exam to MBBS in India, shall be eligible for one-year mandatory internship.
This comes after earlier this month, the Council had decided not accepting the compensatory certificates obtained by the FMGs. Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that through the notice dated 07.06.2024, NMC announced that it would not accept the compensatory certificates obtained by FMGs from their parent institutes abroad.
However, FMGs started opposing this decision and reached the NMC office to express their objections regarding the same. Recently, after a meeting with the NMC officials, FMG representatives claimed that NMC had assured them to amend its earlier notice.
Thereafter, modifying its stand on the matter, NMC clarified that all the other conditions will remain the same as mentioned in the public notice dated 07.12.2023, through which NMC had issued clarifications on various issues related to the FMGs from Ukraine, recognition of BS course, issue of FMG internship etc.
