Thousands of medical students stranded amidst war situation in Ukraine: Embassy advises to depart country
New Delhi: Due to escalating military tension with Russia, the Indian Embassy has advised all Indians including students to depart from the country. The order was issued after U.S. govt spokespersons said that Russia was expected to invade Ukraine on February 16. The country has approximately 10,000 Indian students studying in various courses in medical colleges.
"Indian nationals are also advised to avoid all non-essential travel to and within Ukraine," stated in the order. Also , the embassy had asked Indian nationals to keep it informed about their status in that country to enable the mission to reach out to them when required.
"In view of the uncertainties of the current situation in Ukraine, Indian nationals in Ukraine, particularly students whose stay is not essential, may consider leaving temporarily, and Indian nationals are requested to keep the Embassy informed about the status of their presence in Ukraine to enable the Embassy to reach them where required," the embassy said.
It said the mission continues to function normally to provide all services to Indian nationals in Ukraine. The US and its Western allies have been severely critical of Russia over its continuing build-up of forces near the Ukraine border. The US has already sent extra troops to Europe to support its allies in the backdrop of fears of a Russian invasion of Ukraine.
According to The Hindu that the Embassy of India in Kyiv has been contacting Indian citizens based in Ukraine and collecting information those who may require evacuation in case a conflict flares up between Russia and Ukraine.
Also, Russian military has encircled Ukraine from the east in Donbas and the South along the Black Sea coast. In the north, Russia is conducting a military drill with Belarus, reports Hindu.
