Kochi: Two individuals have been arrested by the North Paravur for allegedly forging a psychiatrist's seals and prescriptions to illegally obtain nitrazepam tablets. The accused forged the seal and prescription of a psychiatrist employed at a hospital in the North Paravur area.

The accused have been identified as 31-year-old Nikson and 36-year-old Snoop both residents of North Paravur. Both were caught on Sunday, March 23.

According to police sources, the duo was involved in manufacturing fake seals and creating fake prescriptions to procure the hypnotic drug for both personal use and sale.

The arrests were made following a tip-off received by Vaibhav Saxena, the District Police Chief of Ernakulam Rural. The police are now investigating the extent of the illegal operation and whether more individuals are involved.

Nitrazepam, typically prescribed for certain mental health conditions, is often misused by drug addicts as reported by The Hindu. Nitrazepam can cause dependence, addiction, and benzodiazepine withdrawal syndrome.

Medical Dialogues in 2017 reported about prescription drugs having Misuse/Abuse Potential. Among them, Nitrazepam was listed in the category of drugs that required extra special care when prescribed to anyone.

Medical Dialogues a few days ago reported about a search operation on a drug abuse complaint where three house surgeons of Madras Medical College and Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) were arrested after being caught red-handed with marijuana and ketamine in their PG hostel on the campus.

During the raid, the police recovered and seized 149 grams of ganja and four vials of ketamine from the possession of four postgraduate medical students in their hostel room. Although the police arrested three of them, the fourth student was absconding.
