12 Urologists, Nephrologists and Scientists shine in Stanford University 2025 Top 2% Scientists List

New Delhi: Altogether 12 renowned urologists, nephrologists and scientists from various prestigious health and medical institutes across India have been recognised among the world’s top 2% of scientists in the prestigious database curated by Professor John P.A. Ioannidis of Stanford University, in collaboration with the Elsevier Data Repository. This honour acknowledges their pioneering research, clinical achievements, and consistent impact on the field.

Stanford University's database of top-cited scientists for the year 2025 provides standardised information on citations, h-index, co-authorship-adjusted h-index, citations to papers in different authorship positions, and a composite indicator (c-score). The selection is based on the top 100,000 scientists by c-score (with and without self-citations) or a 2% or above percentile rank in the sub-field.

Here are the details of the Indian urologists, nephrologists and scientists included in Stanford University's 2025 list:

1. Shrikant R Mulay

During his PhD, in continuation of the work done in the master's course, Shrikant Mulay widened his area of research and focused on investigating the molecular mechanisms of kidney tissue repair after acute as well as chronic kidney injury. He is the Director at AstraZeneca Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolism and a former scientist at Central Drug Research Institute, Lucknow.

He completed his Habilitation in Experimental Medicine in 2017 from Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich, Germany, PhD in Human Biology in 2013 from Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich, Germany, and M.S. in Pharmacology and Toxicology in 2009 from the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research, Mohali, India.

Shrikant Mulay was awarded the Ramalingaswamy Fellowship from the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, in 2019, and he received the Stanley Shaldon Young Investigator Award from ERA-EDTA in Denmark in 2017. 

He holds a rank of 42,983 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 47,787 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 15, with a total of 700 citations for the year, also excluding self-citations.

2. Dr Arvind Bagge

Following graduation from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Dr Arvind continued with postgraduate training in paediatrics and pediatric nephrology from the same centre, research fellowships at Cedars Sinai Medical Centre (Los Angeles, CA) and Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children (London).

He has been on the faculty of AIIMS since 1991 and is currently Professor of Paediatrics, Division of Nephrology. His research interests encompass multiple facets of nephrology, with a focus on clinical trials, acute kidney injury, hemolytic uremic syndrome and nephrotic syndrome. He has published widely in the speciality and has led national guidelines on common kidney diseases in children. He currently collaborates with colleagues from across the country on translational research projects on nephrotic syndrome, hemolytic uremic syndrome and CAKUT, and provides specialised laboratory support for managing some of these illnesses.

Arvind Bagga has served as Editor of Indian Paediatrics and Pediatric Research and is on the editorial board of Pediatric Nephrology, World J Pediatrics and Current Pediatrics. He is a member of the KDIGO international groups on thrombotic microangiopathy and management of glomerulonephritis.

He holds a rank of 90,887 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 84,699 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 15, with a total of 1,621 citations for the year, also excluding self-citations.

3. Dr Narayan M. Prasad

Dr Narayan Prasad is a Professor and Head of the Department of Nephrology at the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Raebareli Road, Lucknow. He has earned an MD, DNB in medicine, DM, DNB, MNAMS, FISN, FASN in Nephrology, and FRCP (London). His professional roles include Hon. Secretary, Indian Society of Nephrology; Deputy Chair, South Asia Regional Board, Int Soc Nephrology; Council Member, Int Soc Nephrology; Former Secretary, Indian Society of Organ Transplantation; Former Secretary, Peritoneal Dialysis Society of India; and Former Treasurer, Indian Society of Nephrology.

Recipient of the Khullar oration, Jansen Cilag, Bansal award oration of ISN-India, Young investigator and best abstract award at ISPD 2006, Asia PD College 2006, along with 17 other best research awards. He was invited to 98 lectures (National and International); 126 National and International podiums and poster research presentations at ASN, WCN, ERA-EDTA, ISPD, APSN, and Japan Kid Week.

As per the list, Dr Prasad holds a rank of 110,911 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 126,445 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 22, with altogether 9,273 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).

4. Dr. (Prof.) Sanjay Kumar Agarwal 

Former AIIMS Professor and Head of the department of nephrology, Dr Sanjay Kumar Agarwal is the Chairman of Nephrology and Kidney Transplant Medicine at Marengo Asia Hospital, Gurugram. He has more than 40 years of Nephrology experience, mostly at AIIMS, New Delhi and trained 125+ trainees in Nephrology in the last 35 years.

Dr Sanjay Kumar Agarwal did his graduate and postgraduate studies from King George Medical College, Lucknow and his nephrology specialization from All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, in 1987.

His specialities include Diabetes and kidney, High blood pressure and kidney, Urinary tract infection, Prevention of progression of chronic kidney diseases, Nephrotic syndrome, Glomerular disease, Kidney transplantation and Dialysis.

As per the list, Dr Agarwal holds a rank of 157,127 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 177,918 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 10, with altogether 2,409 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).

5. Dr Mahesh Ramanlal Desai 

Dr Mahesh Desai is the Medical Director and Managing Trustee of Muljibhai Patel Urological Hospital (MPUH) at Nadiad, and heads the robotic surgery team at Centre for Robotic Surgery (CRS), India. He is one of the most senior and world-renowned urologists (robotic surgeons) who pioneered various new minimally invasive procedures of urology, as well as modern treatment for various kidney diseases in India.

With regards to prostate, he has vast experience in the treatment modalities from open to laparoscopic to robotic prostatectomy, right from the developmental stage to the established stage. He successfully performed the first live Renal Transplant in Gujarat, India.

His specialities lie in Robotic prostate cancer surgery, robotic pediatric surgery, robotic bladder cancer surgery, robotic kidney cancer surgery; specialist treatments for bladder, prostate, and kidney diseases.

As per the list, Dr Mahesh holds a rank of 228,388 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 265,658 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 10, with altogether 486 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).

6. Dr Aditi Prashant Sinha

She is a pediatric nephrologist at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. She has earned a place on Stanford’s prestigious list in recognition of his significant contributions to the fields of urology and nephrology.

As per the list, Dr Aditi holds a rank of 257,290 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 231,684 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 10, with altogether 530 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).

7. Dr Shrawan Kumar Singh

With over 35 years of experience, Dr Shrawan Kumar Singh retired as Professor and Head, Urology from PGIMER, Chandigarh in December 2022. He has vast experience in management for Kidney, Ureter, Urinary Bladder, Genitalia and Prostate Problems. His expertise lies in the treatment of Stones, Cancers, Urinary Obstruction, urinary leakage and Sexual problems.

Dr Singh did his MBBS from Darbhanga Medical College, Bihar, MS General Surgery and MCh Urology from PGIMER, Chandigarh. He is in the forefront amongst the Urologists of India and has international standing. He is a reputed clinician and well known for finding a simple solution even for a complex Urological problem. To his credit, he has many national and 14 International honours and awards. He is a versatile Uro-genital Surgeon, certified Robotic Console Surgeon performing Robotic Assisted Surgery for 8 years. He is a member of various scientific societies such as AUA, SIU, AST, UAA, USI, and ISOT.

As per the list, Dr Singh holds a rank of 265,666 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 290,204 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 8, with altogether 879 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).

8. Dr Santosh Varughese

Dr Santosh Varughese is the Director of Nephrology at Christian Medical College (CMC) Vellore. It is also where he did all his medical studies, including specialising in Nephrology. He received training at the University of Toronto and the Renal Unit of Toronto General Hospital.

He is one of five medical specialists from CMC Vellore to be awarded a scholarship by the University of Melbourne to pursue a PhD. He was chosen to delve into the genetics of atypical forms of Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD).

As per the list, Dr Santosh holds a rank of 288,808 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 283,644 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 20, with altogether 9,429 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).

9. Dr Rajeev Kumar

Dr Rajeev Kumar is a Professor of Urology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, where he obtained all his medical training. His principal areas of clinical work are minimally invasive (laparoscopic and robotic) urology with a focus on adrenal surgeries, percutaneous stone surgery, and microsurgery. His research interests are MR techniques for prostate cancer diagnosis and the aetiology of male infertility. He has published over 250 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and delivered over 100 international lectures.

He was Chief Editor of the Indian Journal of Urology for 10 years and serves in various editorial capacities for the Journal of Urology, National Medical Journal of India, International Journal of Urology, Investigative and Clinical Urology, and the Asian Journal of Urology. He is Past-President (2024-25) of the Société Internationale d'Urologie and Adjunct Secretary General of the Urological Association of Asia. He is also a member of the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons.

As per the list, Dr Rajeev holds a rank of 289,186 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 333,081 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 6, with altogether 269 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).

10. Manoj Kumar Jain

Manoj Kumar Jain from University of Lucknow has earned a place on Stanford’s prestigious list in recognition of his significant contributions to the fields of urology and nephrology.

As per the list, Manoj holds a rank of 280,102 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 295,565 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 9, with altogether 351 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).

11. Santosh Kumar Singh

A research scholar from GLA University, Mathura, has earned a place on Stanford’s prestigious list in recognition of his significant contributions to the fields of urology and nephrology.

As per the list, Santosh holds a rank of 306,813 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 274,069 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 11, with altogether 439 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).

12. Vivek Kumar 

Recognised for his remarkable contributions to urology and nephrology, Vivek Kumar from the Centre for Aromatic Plants (CAP) has been featured in the esteemed Stanford list.

As per the list, Santosh holds a rank of 165,383 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 160,931 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 15, with altogether 7,148 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).
