14 Indian Orthopaedicians get recognised in Stanford University 2025 list of World's Top 2% Scientists
New Delhi: A total of 14 orthopaedicians from India's various prestigious health and medical institutes have been recognised among the world's top 2% of scientists in the prestigious database curated by Professor John P.A. Ioannidis of Stanford University, in collaboration with the Elsevier Data Repository.
Being recognised in Stanford University's top 2% list of scientists acknowledges their pioneering research, clinical achievements, and consistent impact on the field.
Stanford University's 2025 database of the top-cited scientists provides standardised information on citations, h-index, co-authorship adjusted hm-index, citations to papers in different authorship positions and a composite indicator (c-score). The selection is based on the top 100,000 scientists by c-score (with and without self-citations) or a 2% or above percentile rank in the sub-field.
Below are the details of Indian Orthopaedicians featured in Stanford University's list for 2025:
1. Dr. Raju Vaishya (Delhi): A distinguished orthopaedic surgeon and Indian researcher, Dr. (Prof) Vaishya has more than 38 years of experience. He is a Senior Consultant Orthopaedic & Joint Replacement Surgeon, Adjunct Professor, Clinical Tutor, and Research Advisor at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi. He is also the President of Arthritis Care Foundation.
Dr Vaishya specialises in total joint replacement & Arthroscopic Surgery, Joint preservation techniques, and 3D printing in Orthopaedics. He actively contributes to the academic sphere, holding positions like a member of the Specialist Board for Orthopaedics, an Adjunct Professor and a Distinguished Clinical Tutor at Apollo Hospitals Educational and Research Foundation. He has guided numerous postgraduate theses. His contributions have earned him recognition as a distinguished PG teacher and examiner.
He pursued his MBBS and MS in Ortho from Jiwaji University, Gwalior, in 1983 and 1986 respectively. After that, he pursued his MCh in Ortho from the University of Liverpool in 1990, got a Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2012, and a Fellowship from the American College of Surgeons in 2020.
Dr. Vaishya is also a prolific researcher and author with over 800 publications in national and international orthopaedic journals and book chapters. Like last year, this year also, Dr. Vaishya has been recognised as one of the 2% scientists across the world, as per Stanford University's list of 2025.
As per the list, Dr. Vaishya holds a rank of 27759 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 25871 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, Dr. Vaishya's h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 14, with altogether 1331 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that Dr. Vaishya had been featured in the Stanford University's list of top 2% scientists in 2024 as well. Last year, he held a rank of 15856 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 17,307 when all citations are included.
Back in 2021, altogether 3352 researchers from India found their place in the list and Dr. Vaishya stood at #460. His rank was #2 among all the Indian Orthopaedic Surgeons.
For his contributions as a researcher, Dr. Vaishya received several distinguished awards over the years, including Dr. BC Roy Award, Indian Achiever's Award (2021), Distinguished Researcher Award of AHERFm SIEMENS-GAPIO Award etc. He was also featured in the Asia Book of Records twice for setting a record for writing the maximum number of articles on the COVID-19 pandemic in a short time (3 months and 20 days), by publishing 40 articles, and by publishing the maximum number of 106 papers in 2020. Dr. Vaishya is also a World record holder (listed in the Limca & India Book of Records four times) for doing bilateral total knee replacement in the oldest person & couple (at the age of 93 & 86 years).
2. Dr. Shanmuganathan Rajasekaran (Coimbatore): A renowned Indian Orthopaedic and Spine Surgeon, Dr Rajasekaran is the Chairman of Orthopaedic and Spine Surgery at Ganga Hospitals, Coimbatore.
After pursuing his MBBS from the University of Madras in 1980, Dr. Rajasekaran pursued D Ortho and MS Ortho from the Madras Medical College, Chennai, in 1984 and 1987 respectively. He also has a DNB degree and FRCS from UK and FACS from USA. He pursued MCh in Orthopaedic Surgery from the University of Liverpool in 1990 and a PhD in Spine Surgery from Tamil Nadu Medical University in 2000.
Dr. Rajasekaran has a brilliant academic career and he was the 'Best outgoing student' of Coimbatore Medical College and stood first in the University of Madras in the orthopaedic post-graduate examinations. He was awarded the Khazenifer Gold Medal and Norman Roberts Medal for best performance during his M.Ch exams in Liverpool, UK. He completed his Ph.D in 2000. He has a special interest in spine surgery, arthroplasty and clinical research in major trauma.
He has led the unit’s basic science research in spinal deformities, disc nutrition and biology and genetics of disc degeneration which have been recognised with numerous awards and published in international journals. Dr Rajasekaran has 220 publications in international journals, 46 national publications and 428 international and 495 national presentations. He has also contributed 57 chapters to international books and is the chief editor of a video Atlas of Spine Surgery and the ASSI textbook on Spinal Infections & Trauma.
For his research in Orthopedics, Dr. Rajasekaran has been recognised as one of the 2% scientists across the world, as per Stanford University's list of 2025.
As per the list, Dr. Rajasekaran holds a rank of 28775 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 26936 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, Dr. Rajasekaran's h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 12, with altogether 1092 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).
Last year, Dr. Rajasekaran was featured in the top 2% list of scientists by Stanford University and held a rank of 19224 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 17,487 when all citations were included.
3. Dr. Rajesh Malhotra (Delhi): Dr. Malhotra is the former Professor and Head of the Department of Orthopaedics at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. Currently, he is Clinical Lead of Orthopaedics at Apollo Indraprastha Hospital. He pursued both his MBBS and MS in Orthopaedics from AIIMS, Delhi. He has also been a Fellow of International Medical Sciences Academy (FIMSA), a Fellow of Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (FRCS), a Member of National Academy of Sciences (MNASc), and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).
He has been invited as an Expert in several International and National Task Forces such as American Society for Bone & Mineral Research (ASBMR) Global International Task Force on Secondary Fracture Prevention for Osteoporotic fractures, International Consensus Meeting in the field of Periprosthetic Joint Infections (ICPJI) organized by Musculoskeletal Infection Society (MSIS) in Philadelphia on August 2013, National consensus development for prophylaxis against DVT. He is a member of the Advisory Group of ICMR for WHO-ICMR Task Forces on Osteoporosis, Road Traffic Injuries Surveillance, Normative laboratory parameters in India and Musculoskeletal Disorders in India. He edits a journal, which is circulated nationwide in India. He has more than 450 articles to his credit, published in national and international journals. He has authored/edited 11 books and contributed 33 chapters in various national and international books. He has delivered nearly 440 invited guest lectures in various national and international conferences. He is an avid researcher and a popular teacher.
As per Stanford University's list of 2025, Dr. Rajesh Malhotra has been recognised as one of the top 2% scientists across the world. The data in the list shows that Dr. Malhotra holds a rank of 75884 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 85797 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, Dr. Malhotra's h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 14, with altogether 2252 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).
4. Dr. Sathish Muthu (Chennai): A distinguished orthopaedic surgeon and researcher, Dr. Sathish Muthu, is currently working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics, Government Medical College & Hospital, Karur, Tamil Nadu. He is also a researcher at Karpagam Academy of Higher Education, Coimbatore. He also leads the Orthopaedic Research Group in India, a non-profit research organisation to instigate research in daily clinical practice among orthopaedicians. Dr. Muthu also collaborates with global organizations such as AO Spine.
Dr. Muthu pursued MBBS and MS Orthopaedics from Stanley Medical College & Hospital Chennai, and Madras Medical College and Hospital, respectively. He also pursued DNB Orthopaedics, FISS Spine Surgery, FEIORA (Orthopaedic Rheumatology), FIRM(Regenerative Medicine), and PhD in Regenerative Medicine.
He has published hundreds of research articles in peer-reviewed international journals, and book chapters. He is an Associate Editor in various high-impact international journals like PLoS One, Indian Journal of Orthopaedics and Journal of Orthopaedic Case Reports. He is also one of the Editorial Board Members of World Journal of Stem Cells, World Journal of Orthopaedics, World Journal of Clinical Cases and an editor of Brew with Bones.
He was recently awarded the Luiz Vialle Award 2024 for being the most promising research associate of the AO Spine Knowledge Forum Degenerative. Further, his research work was recognised with the Best Young Researcher Award 2024 from the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University for his outstanding research work among the medical faculties of the university. He has a special interest in bringing biologic therapies to routine orthopaedic practice to treat common musculoskeletal ailments. His research focus involves knee osteoarthritis, degenerative spinal disorders, mesenchymal stem cells, and cartilage bioengineering.
Dr. Sathish Muthu has been recognised as one of the top 2% scientists across the world, as per Stanford University's list of 2025. The data in the list shows that Dr. Muthu holds a rank of 76505 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 46181 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, Dr. Muthu's h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 14, with altogether 1529 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).
He was also recognised as one of the top 2% of scientists across the world in Stanford University's list of 2025. As per the list, Dr. Muthu held a rank of 209,105 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 181,164 when all citations are included.
5. Dr. Bhavuk Garg (Delhi): Currently working as a Professor of Orthopaedics at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, Dr. Bhavuk Garg pursued his MBBS from the University College of Medical Sciences (UCMS), Delhi and after that pursued an MS in Orthopaedics from AIIMS. He also has a MAMS, MRCS (Glasgow), FACS, FIMSA, FHTS degrees.
Dr. Garg has been a Fellow in trauma and orthopaedic surgery (Germany), AADO Trauma Fellow (Hong Kong), Dartmouth Spine Fellow (USA), Fellow in Arthroplasty (J&J), ASSI Spine Fellow, Robert Roaf Fellow (IOA), DOA fellow, SRS Spine fellow (Washington University, USA).
His academic interests include spine trauma, spinal deformities, degenerative spine, osteoporosis, minimally invasive spine surgeries, spinal infections, shoulder and elbow arthroplasty, trauma and congenital upper limb anomalies. He is the author of several chapters in books of repute. With the prime aim to serve his countrymen, he is developing low-cost technologies and crafting patient-specific instruments as well as guiding our youngsters into innovations and have gained recognition from the Indian government as well as reputed universities like Stanford.
Dr. Garg has been recognised as one of the top 2% scientists across the world, as per Stanford University's list of 2025. According to the data, Dr. Garg holds a rank of 135356 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 155358 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, Dr. Garg's h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 10, with altogether 342 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that Dr. Garg had been recognised as one of the top 2% scientists across the world, as per Stanford University's list of 2024 as well. Last year, Dr. Garg held a rank of 251,041 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 277,434 when all citations are included. 6. Dr. Ajay Puri (Mumbai): Dr. (Prof) Ajay Puri is the Chief of Orthopaedic Oncology and the Professor and Head of the Surgical Oncology Department at the Tata Memorial Centre & Homi Bhabha National Institute.
Prof Ajay has an extensive national and international teaching experience and has held faculty and examiner positions Indian Institute of Technology – Kanpur, University of Malaya, University of Seychelles and Dr. MGR Medical University among others.
Dr. Puri pursued his M.S. in Ortho from the University of Bombay and his Diploma Tissue Banking from the National University of Singapore. Affiliated with several national and international professional organisations, Dr. Puri has served as the Chairman of the Indian Orthopaedic Association (Oncology) and has also been a member of the Government of India's Health Ministry Task Force for guidelines on management of musculoskeletal sarcomas.
He has received global acknowledgement for his contribution to the field of orthopaedics, and he has been a recipient of several awards and international fellowships including Golden Peacock Innovation award (2010) and Best Published Paper Award (2010) by Indian Orthopedic Association in Clinical Research Category. Dr. Puri has published more than 75 indexed papers and has been a principal investigator of 7 high-impact research projects. Further, he has authored and edited more than a dozen books and chapters.
Dr. Puri has been affiliated with 24 national and international professional organisations and serves as the Chairman of Indian Orthopedic Association (Oncology) and he also has been on the International Editorial Board of Bone & Joint – 360, Sarcoma and Frontiers in Orthopedic Surgery. He has also served as a Mentor for Indian Orthopedic Association and as an Assessor for the erstwhile Medical Council of India.
Dr. Puri has been recognised as one of the top 2% scientists across the world, as per Stanford University's list of 2025. According to the data, Dr. Puri holds a rank of 190495 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 181568 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, Dr. Puri's h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 7, with altogether 325 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).
Dr. Puri had also been recognised as one of the top 2% scientists across the world in the Stanford University's 2024 list. He held a rank of 219,965 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 214,449 when all citations are included. 7. Dr. Anil K Jain (Delhi): An experienced and renowned orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Anil K. Jain served as the Principal, Professor, and Head of the Department of Orthopaedics at the University College of Medical Sciences (UCMS) in Delhi. He also held positions at the University of Delhi and Safdarjung Hospital and is a Past President of the Indian Orthopaedic Association.
Dr. Jain pursued his MBBS and MS Ortho from Gandhi Medical College, Bhopal, in the years 1980 and 1984, respectively. He also has a M.A.M.S. degree from the National Academy of Medical Sciences, FRCS from United Kingdom, FAMS from National Academy of Medical Sciences, New Delhi and he was also an Honorary Fellow of Indian Orthopaedic Association.
He has published over 150 articles in peer-reviewed indexed journals. He has unique distinction of publishing highest number of articles on TB spine in the world with 10 of his articles featured in 250 most cited articles. Dr. Jain was listed among the top 2% scientists from India for several consequtive years. He was also the Team lead to INDEX TB Guidelines (2016).
Dr. Jain is the Editor-in-chief of the Annals of National Academy of Medical sciences. He has previously been the Editor of Indian Journal of Orthopaedics (2007-2012), launched Indian spine journal (2018-2023), Deputy Editor(2016-2018) of Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (Am). He was Guest editor to Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research for Feb 2005 and July 2007 issues.
Dr. Jain has been recognised as one of the top 2% scientists across the world, as per Stanford University's list of 2025. According to the data, Dr. Jain holds a rank of 193341 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 196897 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, Dr. Jain's h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 6, with altogether 157 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).

Dr. Mandeep S Dhillon (Chandigarh): After devoting 37 years to providing medical care, Orthopaedic Surgeon and Head of the Department at Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, (PGI) Chandigarh, Professor Mandeep Singh Dhillon officially retired from his position at the institute last year.
He also served as the head of the Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Department at PGIMER and is a Sports medicine specialist. Besides PGIMER, Dr Dhillion worked in various organisations like Medical College Patiala and Apollo Hospitals.
He is a specialist in Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy, Foot and Ankle problems, Hip and knee Replacement, Pioneer in Orthobiologics including PRP therapies, regenerative procedures for cartilage and tendon problems and many more.
Last year, he joined as the Director of Regenerative and Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics at Fortis Hospital, Mohali. He pursued his MBBS from the Government Medical College, Patiala.
As per Stanford University's list of 2025, Dr. Dhillon has been recognised as one of the top 2% scientists across the world. The data in the list showed that, Dr. Dhillon holds a rank of 209754 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 212099 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, Dr. Dhillon's h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 9, with altogether 496 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).
9. Dr. Ramesh K Sen (Chandigarh): A renowned Orthopaedic Surgeon, Prof. Sen, is currently serving at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mohali. He has more than 28 years of experience in Orthopaedic surgery, including 20 years of experience to work as a faculty at PGIMER. He was elevated as Professor in the Department Of Orthopaedics, PGIMER,in 2008. Previously, he also worked at Fortis Hospital Mohali.
Dr. Sen pursued his MBBS and MS in Orthopaedics from IGMC, Shimla. Thereafter he pursued DNB in Orthopaedics and later pursued a PhD Orthopaedics from PGIMER Chandigarh. After getting Basic Orthopaedic education in India, Prof Sen Received further training in Germany and USA.
Prof Sen has extensive surgical experience in management of pelvi-acetabular injuries and hip and knee joint replacement surgery. He has also pioneered the role of stem cell treatment in AVN disease of the hip joint and holds significant experience in complex joint replacements,revision hip and knee arthroplasty and complicated trauma.
For his work in research, he received the highest research award of SAARC countries as well as of Indian Orthopaedic Association(IOA). He has been the Chairperson of Research Foundation as well as Vice President of IOA. Prof Sen also holds the patent for new pelvic plate for reconstruction of acetabulum fractures.
As per the Stanford University's list of 2025, Dr. Sen has been recognised as one of the top 2% scientists across the world. The data in the list showed that, Dr. Sen holds a rank of 218193 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 231832 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, Dr. Sen's h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 8, with altogether 254 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).
10. Dr. Anil Agarwal (Delhi): A specialist in Orthopaedics, Dr. Anil Agarwal is the Head of the Department of Orthopaediatrics at Chacha Nehru Bal Chikitsalaya. For his work in medical research, Dr. Agarwal has been recognised as one of the top 2% scientists across the world, as per the Stanford University's list of 2025.
The data in the list showed that, Dr. Agrawal holds a rank of 241059 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 264,407 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, Dr. Agrawal's h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 6, with altogether 150 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).
11. Dr. Madhan Jeyaraman (Chennai): Dr. Jeyaraman joined as an Assistant Professor at ACS Medical College Hospital back in 2021 and he is also the Additional Director of ACS Advanced Medical Research Institute.
He pursued his MBBS from Government Stanley Medical College and thereafter completed his MS Orthopaedics from JJM Medical College. Dr. Jeyaraman secured a fellowship in Stemcell and Regenerative Medicine at the International Association of Stemcell and Regenerative Medicine and later a fellowship in Orthopaedic Rheumatology at Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia University, Lucknow. He has been a fellow at Indian Orthopaedic Association and Tamil Nadu Orthopaedic Association and he also holds a PhD degree in Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine.
As per Stanford University's list of 2025, Dr. Jeyaraman has been recognised as one of the top 2% scientists across the world. The data in the list showed that Dr. Jeyaraman holds a rank of 260196 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 196,501 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, Dr. Jeyaraman's h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 10, with altogether 404 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).
12. Dr. Abhishek Vaish (Delhi): Currently working as an Associate Consultant at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi, Dr. Vaish completed his senior residency from Vardhman Mahavir Medical College and Safdarjung Hospital.
His area of research interest in Orthopaedic surgery lies in Joint preservation, Cartilage Transplantation, 3D printing, Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy, Arthroplasty, Complex Trauma.
As per Stanford University's list of 2025, Dr. Vaish has been recognised as one of the top 2% scientists across the world. The data in the list showed that Dr. Vaish holds a rank of 263,025 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 245267 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, Dr. Vaish's h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 10, with altogether 531 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).
13. Dr. Rishi Mugesh Kanna (Coimbatore): After pursuing his MBBS from Madurai Medical College in 2022, Dr. Kanna pursued his postgraduation in MS Orthopaedics from the Postgraduate Institute at Chandigarh. He was elected as a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2007. He completed the fellowship training in spine surgery at Ganga Hospital and an advanced spine surgical fellowship at Nottingham, England.
Dr. Kanna specialises in Spine Surgery and his clinical interests include back pain, spondylosis, spinal infections, trauma and deformities. His research focus includes genetics of disc disease, cervical spine imaging and spinal trauma techniques.
For his work in the field of research, Dr. Kanna has been recognised as one of the top 2% scientists across the world, as per the Stanford University's list of 2025.

14. Dr. Arun B Mullaji (Mumbai): An Orthopaedic Surgeon, Dr. Arun B Mullaji is the Director of Mullaji Knee Clinic. He is also a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Breach Candy Hospital, P. D. Hinduja Hospital and Cumballa Hill Hospitals with an extensive practice spanning over 25 years.
Dr. Mullaji pursued his postgraduation in Orthopaedic Surgery at the Seth GS Medical College and King Edward Memorial Hospital, Mumbai and later received extensive specialized training for 4 years overseas in the UK, US, Germany, and Hong Kong. Later, he was also appointed as a Consultant in the UK NHS at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, Arrowe Park and Clatterbridge Hospitals, before he came back to India.
Dr. Arun Mullaji has been Founder Member of Indian Society of Hip and Knee Surgeons, Past President Indian Society of Hip and Knee Surgeons, Past President Asia Pacific Arthroplasty Society, and Member of The American Knee Society, European Knee Society, Asia Pacific Arthroplasty Society, British Orthopaedic Association, British Orthopaedic Research Society, Indian Orthopaedic Association, and serves on the Board of Directors of the International Society for Technology in Arthroplasty.
Apart from working as an Orthopaedic Surgeon, Dr. Mullaji is also working on his medical research. He has been on the Design Team for the Attune Knee implant system (DePuy, Johnson & Johnson) which has been used for Total Knee Replacement in over a million patients. He is also a joint patent holder (with IIT) for Nanotechnology products.
