Pune: Three doctors and two nurses have been charged with alleged medical negligence after the death of a two-year-old boy during treatment at a private hospital in Chikhli. The charges followed a report from a panel of medical experts, which confirmed negligence in the boy's treatment.

According to the mother's statement, her son was hospitalized due to a cold and cough; however, she later found that his legs below the knee had suffered severe burns from a warmer machine after two doctors had taken samples for a test. These injuries ultimately resulted in his death.

The accused doctors have been identified as Dr Jitesh Madansingh Dobhal, Dr Rajnish Jagdamba Prasad Mishra, Dr Rohan Pranhans Mali and nurses Rachel Anil Dive and Savita Nandkishore Varwate.

According to the report provided by medical board experts from Sassoon General Hospital (SGH) and BJ Medical College (BJMC) revealed that these doctors and nursing staff were negligent in treating the boy thus holding them responsible for the fatal outcome.

The medical board experts were formed after the mother of the boy filed a complaint in this regard at Chikhli Police Station accusing the doctors and nursing staff of medical negligence. As a result, an FIR was registered on November 5 against the five healthcare professionals under relevant sections of the BNS based on the findings of the report.

As per the HT news report, the incident happened after the toddler was taken to the clinic of Dr Jitesh Madansingh Dobhal with symptoms of a cold and cough on November 17, 2023. After examining him, Dr Dobhal referred him to Imperial Hospital for further care. Based on his recommendation, the mother admitted his son to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) on the same day in the afternoon.

On the morning of 18th November 2023, Dr Mishra and Dr Mali reportedly entered the room to take a sample from the boy and asked his mother to step outside. When the mother returned around 8 a.m., she discovered that her son’s legs below the knee had been severely burned by a warmer machine.
