Infant dies after being given medication intended for nebulizer, 2 Nurses booked
Rajkot: In a case of alleged medical negligence, a nurse and a trainee nurse have been booked for causing death due to negligence after a five-and-a-half-month-old infant tragically lost his life at the Janana Hospital for Children in Rajkot after receiving medication intended for a nebulizer.
According to an investigation conducted by hospital authorities, the trainee nurse, Pintoo Fangaliya, under the guidance of nurse Ekta Rathod, mistakenly injected medication intended for nebulisation directly into the infant's leg.

The baby, who was recovering from pneumonia and tuberculosis, suffered a rapid deterioration in health following the error and died later despite efforts to save him in the paediatric ICU.
The infant was transferred to Janana Hospital on June 4, after initially receiving treatment for pneumonia and TB at a hospital in Gondal. As per a TOI news report, the infant was admitted to Gondal Hospital after he developed a fever. However, later the infant was diagnosed with pneumonia and TB.
The attending doctor at Janana Hospital prescribed the use of a nebuliser three times daily. However, on the afternoon of July 4, the nurse reportedly instructed the trainee nurse to administer the medication via injection instead of nebulisation at around 1.30 pm. Although the baby's mother voiced her rejection, they were allegedly dismissed by the two nurses and they administered the injection.
Following this, the grieving mother filed a complaint with the Rajkot A-Division police against the two nurses. During the investigation, the police confirmed that the infant's death was indeed due to negligence on the part of the medical staff involved.
Subsequently, the police have booked the two nurses under section 106(1) of the BNS, which pertains to causing death by negligence.
